[ORP] An Nasr and the Lioness
« on: 25 March, 2014, 01:33:01 PM »
Oriental ship arrived to the port in Brugge. All passengers were looking same in smoggy evening - same tired and grey. Only one group was different. It was leaded by tall men in white long robe well known on south as jellabia. On the head he had kufyia - a kind of turban or the scarf. The headdress was covering his hairs and almost whole face. Only his two blue eyes were visible. And these eyes were giving orders to their subjects - typical Arabs. One of them, youngest, was keeping an animal on a leash. Man in white stopped.

Blue eyes took a look on the port and the city before him. In the time when his men were unboarding, he was trying to remind himself this City. He never was in flemish harbour. He appreciated order in this place, but didn't pay too much attention for these details. His eyes were looking for something else, so his gaze was moving very fast through all places around.

Man in white was saved from his thoughts by touch of his animal - a young and impressive lioness. She was asking him for an attention. "Habiibi? What do you think about this place?" He was stroking her and talking in gentle way "Is it good place for lioness? It was.. some time ago..". Blue-eyed man nodded on his subjects. One of them answered "Sayyid, we are ready". One more nodding was an answer for him. The group of oriental persons began the way to the center of the City.

Soon the man in white stopped. His eyes found that what he was looking for - the tower with and triangle on the top of roof. "There all was began" said to himself and added to his subjects "go to find rooms. And you Habiibi? Want you go with me?" Again man in white focused on the lioness. Oldest from subjects had to disturb him "efendi? What name shall we use?". The question wasn't as stupid like it could look for it. Old man know how many names was using his master. Short and harsh "al-Zarqai" connected with same gaze was the answer. "as you wish, sayyid" nodded old man and went with all subjects.

When Al-Zarqai left alone, he took his friend and went straight to the Cathedral of Brugge. Both were watching like the building is growing up. The man whose gaze was looking in the past, and the lioness looking without any interest. The church was full of believers. The preys were audible from the square where two visitors were standing. However nor the lord nor animal weren't focused on them. Al-Zarquai fell on one knee. He began to stroke a lion and whisper to her ear "here all was began, Habiibi, all.. take a look on these peoples.. I was between them.. and then I had a revelation..". Animal was anxious. Her eyes were shining with anger. "Don't be afraid" said much louder "I'm not one of them. I don't bow behind any god! Any!!"

By a while Al-Zarqai was looking  for a fire from the past. Finally he stand up, took lioness and turned them back "came.. here we won't see here nothing except memories.."

Giulia was at the Palace, no time to ponder to last fast changes, there were so many scrolls to read, so many to write, all carefully.
She heard a knock at the door, the valet asking for introducing a visitor. She nodded, a bit harassed, without looking up for a while, sealing the message.

Sir Andries, glad to see you. Which news in the city? - she said to the man has been her personal escort in Andernach, smiling in looking him.

Mylady, all is fine. I just heard about the arrival of a stranger from Orient. Nothing special, but in his group it seems there is also a lioness walking at his side on a leash - he answered quietly.

Giulia's eyes widened suprized - A lioness... a lioness on a leash? - she paused then laughing added - An other lioness in Flanders? Poor her if she is on a leash. Please, Sir Andries, come to see and report news to me.

She thought back to the stories of her nurse about her homeland still for a moment - Maybe a white one? - and took leave of the man, whispering - Probably Meinsent would have understood, but not him, not a man...

in the meantime in the tavern

Rooms were almost prepared. Still hallways were full of Arabs and their strange language. "is ready? How I could to know that?! Here is so cold.. damn Nasr! Bastard.." subjects weren't happy from their long trip. Since no one could understand them, they didn't pay attention what they say about his master. "the usurper! who knows from where he is?!", "indeed he isn't from Zarqai family! arrived from nowhere and they accepted this cheater!". Only oldest from them was calm. "Quiet! That's not our problem! If Zarqai family says he is one of them, then he is! And if he is from older branch of the family, then he is our master! That's all!" Old man took all in his hands. There where he arrived there talks were quieter.

"He is a giaur!" this charge was heaviest. But even that couldn't change mind of old servant "That's no matter! The God says we are servants of his family, so we are also his. Better go to the dock. Second ship should be there already". Two young servants went fast to fulfil an order. They were in hurry cos there was their real lord - "Sayyid Jasir al-Zarqai will save us from here! Came, came!", "perhaps finally he will understood that this stranger is a trickster!"

When Nasr was back to the tavern Jasir was there. "My brother! What a cold kind of al Nar! How do you call it? A hell, right?". Brother of white man was a typical Arab who spent whole life on dust of Sahara. Light brown (with a little dose of blue) eyes were shining in the smile. "That's not a hell, my brother, that's almost the heaven! You will see, you will.." Nasr finally smiled. He took off kufiya from his head and fall into the arms of his sibling. Brown, little curly hairs were dancing around his european face. Brothers were like a day and a night - totally different.

"Tomorow we will go to Andernach! You have to see it! Great land, great peoples.." Nasr was excited like never before. Older than he, Jasir, smiled with irony. "I know very well, you don't care of lands, same not simple citizens you are going to find there". A lioness understood emotions of both brothers. She were going around impatiently. "I see your a.. lover needs a walk. Came, and show me this, not important city." said Jasir with a smile. Then they went out. Two men and a lioness...

Jasir was watching on a leash, but didn't say any word. He knew very well what Nasr would say. Same the lioness didn't complaining too much, just she had no idea why she has to be treated like that. Man in white understood both of his friend. "Yes, I know at home we were walking in other way. But here peoples are scarred. They aren't used to see a lion at all. And you want to show them lioness without any leash?".  Lioness looked deeply into blue eyes of his master. "Seems, Nasreen doesn't understand you in this point. Are you afraid she will eat these Giaurs?" Jasir smiled ironically. "If she would, then I would be the first!" Nasr burst into laughing, and set free his friend. "Habiibi, you are free, just don't exploit this freedom". Lioness was satisfied, but she was still walking near to leg of his master.

"Came my brother, I'll show you something.." said blue-eyed al-Zarqai. They turned left to the market place.

"Market like market, nothing special" said little disappointed Jasir "our are much louder, don't you think so?". Nasr was looking for something and didn't pay too much attention to his brother's words. However he heard them. "Sure, but that's not important. Here the King is used to walk alone. Like a simple citizen. Can you believe in that? Ha?!"

Jasir shaked his head "No, my friend. Perhaps I don't know latin enough, but I heard about the Queen, not a king". Concerned al-Zarqai stopped. His eyes were full of astonishment "a queen… yes. Perhaps he found a wife… queen.. indeed.. I got a letter with queen's seal.. who knows them, and who takes care of it". His friend smiled "indeed, you don't take care of nothing, even of your Nasreen".

The lioness found a stall with chickens. He tasted few of them and were trying to catch few more. Only one word "Habiibi!" was enough for her. She took a look on her master. Her gaze was without any repentance. Nasr didn't say nothing more, was just watching on her. She left her chance for dinner and was back to master's leg. Jasir took few coins and paid for losses.

"Leave it! I will pay" said owner of the lawbreaker "that's my fault. Better say how went trip with your camels. You were late and I was bit worried".

"They are OK, more or less. You know, they can live without water, but cannot with too many water. They are tired now, and that's all". It was almost like a report for his general. Nasr was used for that, so didn't pay attention to the fact who said it. "Good then. We will take one day off before we begin our trip." The answer was in same style. A chief was still living in him.

"But after this day will we prepare a parade?!" this time Jasir's question was full of childish excitation "let they see us!".
"Sure.. why not.. but not today" said a  man with a lion "why not..".

"Camels?!" The chicken-seller was excited "Need to tell to my son! Where it will be?". Nasr couldn't stop his laugh when he was explaining all to this men. "Seems whole city will escort us in two days, that will be best show ever!"

After a one day of a rest all were preparing to new trip. Nasr was again in his white robe, and again hid his face. Only blue eyes were watching all and giving an orders. Because subjects couldn't convince Jasir to accept their arguments, they were working slow but without future complaining.

Soon the white caravan was on the street. Every man was dressed in white. Even camels had white blankets, and all packages were hidden under white material. In the center of caravan was sitting Nasr on a white horse. Same horse, but a bit dapple gray was under Jasir.

Blue eyes gave a sign and all begin the walk. First was a impressive two-humped bactrian leaded by young boy. After them were going dromedaries with riders on them. In the center were going Nasr and Jasir, and the lioness between them. On the sides were next camels. At end of caravan were going subjects and slaves. Part of them were playing on flutes.

Jasir was happy by this show. Same like kids, which were going around them. Just Nasr's eyes weren't showing any joy. "I feel like a fiance who is going to his future wife" said to himself and his heart became to bleeding. "Hiding your face won't help you! I see you aren't smiling! Don't destroy my fun!" Jasir were waving to peoples and by the while all were thinking he is the master of this caravan. Only these who saw gaze of blue eyes understood who is commanding here… His look was sliding by every kid, poor and rich person, simple citizen and every noble person. All they were just a... roadblock.

Giulia was at the window in the private wing of the royal palace looking out, but dipped in many thoughts about incoming days.

Meisent entered the room, soundlessy - My Lady, Sir Andries is waiting outside for reporting you some information.
Giulia nodded, just lightly distracted form her thoughts, turning towards the door only when Sir Andries was entering.

Please, Sir Andries, told me what you already discovered about the stranger from East - Giulia said smiling, a little flash of curiosity in her eyes.

The man start to talk about a very peculiar caravan, with some exotic animals, the lioness but not only...

Amazing, Sir Andries. Camels in Flanders just in springs... but what else?

Sir Andries nodded, well aware of the key point - Sure, My Lady, I was just saying what is fascinating commoners in Brugge streets.
They come for far away, from southern lands beyond the sea. There are two men and their few servants. I talked with the innkeeper where they stopped for resting, but nothing special, just unusual language and manners, too difficult to know more. It seems they are leaving now...

Leaving towards...? - asked Giulia proptly.
It seems toward west, they were quite near the Gentpoort - replied Sir Andries.

West? Well, I need you look closer their movements - she ordered to him. She paused looking him more carefully, then smiling added - Sure, Sir Andries, I know your devotion. Be sure the Royal guard will be able to protect me quite fine during your absence. I trust in you for this mission.

Then she turned to look again outside the window.

The city was chaotic. Merchants, citizens and peasants were numerous in spring.
But in this case many were present for the exotic foreigns.

Heinrich had been warned of the presence of eastern strangers with a lion and camels but  many issues demanded his presence, especially with the coronation of the new queen. He had ordered to the troops to continue in their patrols and report only if the animals bore damage or worst.
Yet he was walking in the courtyard of the castle when he saw the trusty Sir Andries.

"Present this dispatch to the commanders of the men at arms", said Von Hohenlohe handing the message to the knight at his side for then advancing towards the old knight.

"Greetings Lord Heinrich! His Majesty has ordered me to check Gentpoort and surroundings. To check the travelers with exotic fairs... since you are guardian knight of the Gentpoort..."
Sir Andries hesitated without completing the sentence.

Guessing what the knight wanted to ask, Heinrich smiled: "Greetings to you, Sir Andries. And yes, I'll come with you. I never seen camels and lions and I'm curious".

Mounting in the saddle with a handful of men they headed to the exotic group and the huddle of the crowd.

The caravan was far away from the capital. Nasr becomes to be nerved.
"can we leave this white sh...?! We don't need to play anything.. anymore.." said with more resignation than with anger.

Jasir smiled "My Friend. Why? That's cute, we all fit to you and your color"
"Thus.. at least, please give an order to these boys to stop play on flutes!"
"Don't you like the music?" said his brother and took a look on the road behind them "Don't you think so someone follows us?"

Nasr even didn't move his head in this direction. He just looked on the Sun and smiled. "Can we make a deal? I calm you down with these spies, and you calm this music"
"Yeah, sure" This time Jasir was a bit anxious. He nodded on musicians, and flute went back to the pockets. "Now is your turn, just don't kill anyone…". Nasr burst into laughing "I won't! Promise, not today.. at least". When Nasr calmed himself, he answered on the question "take a look on this road. Remind yourself the city. Same, or almost same splendid is Andernach. It's capital of Dukedom. Thus a lot of peoples is traveling with us. That's all. It is one of most important roads in this country, and probably in this part of Europe".

The explanation didn't convince Jasir. Anyway he decided to don't bother Nasr's head anymore. He knew he is enough nerved in these days. "Perhaps we could go for.. hunting. It would be quite interesting". Nasr played ignorant. Better was to don't answer and just go forward. His thought were faster than his horse "the hunting..forest.."

"Well... impressive... a real lioness! And those camels... I never seen anything like it!"
Exclaimed Heinrich barely holding back the reins of the stallion; nervous and eager to gallop.

Had arrived just in time. The group of strangers was going through the gate of the city, surrounded by the curious crowd.
Their clothes and their own behavior was rather strange for the eyes of Flemish knights.
With all flutes that sounded an exotic music.

"What... strange music!", said a knight.
"Yes, but it has its charms", said another.

"They seem quite peaceful and... playful... I'm sorry Sir Andries. But now I have to go back to the castle. As you said they seem headed to the fief of Andernach.
My knights will remain under your command if you want to continue to keep the thing under control
".
Hohnelohe took leave of Sir Andries and the others.
However, he remained for a while to observe the group as the crowd thinned out.

Some children gathered around him, seemed intent to choose between him and the foreigners. Maybe for some new game of knights and ladies.
Heinrcih smiled at them and spurred his horse toward the fortress.

Jasir was tired. He lost his patiency. Long long time ago they arrived to Andernach and they are still here without any good reason. In same day where they came Nasr went alone somewhere. His brother wasn't nor surprised nor worried. He just went to best Inn he found. He was sure it won't be any problem for Nasr to find him. Just in the morning Jasir was still alone there.

After quite long searching he found the Lost. Fortunately Nasr was with lioness, so it was easier to find him. Anyway he was looking bad and didn't want explain nothing. Jasir knew him enough to be calm. He just organized a place for all of them - quiet one, far away from the city. He counted Nasr soon will get back his mood.

Just the true was different. Few weeks ago Jasir asked "what for we are here? what are you doing here?" Nasr looked on him with glaze totally surprised "what?.. I have business here.. to do. If you want, feel free to back even today". But his friend could go away alone. And he knew well that any business are waiting for any of them. What kind of business could do Nasr in forests? He was going out every morning and going back in the evening. always with lioness. Jasir knew they are walking to forest not to the city.

Finally Jasir lost his patience. He used last trick he knew. "Enough! You could even work on the best bargain ever but that doesn't change the fact you gave me your word!" This time Nasr was looking more awaken "I gave? the word?". The question in his eyes was a sign that trick works. "Sure my brother. You know I don't care of money. You said you will show me the great country and greatest city. And now we waste our time in small village. I could leave you few  months ago. But I need a guide." Jasir was trying to be angry, or at least unpleased. It wasn't easy to cheat his brother, but he counted it is possible. At least now when his mind was far away from its owner.

"So come with me and give me my promised entertainments." Seems egoism was working much better than altruism. Jasir tried to don't show how he is afraid of his friend. And now, Nasr left his all thoughts and smiled gently. "As you wish so my brother. I know I'm owing you that.. and even much more". After these words he turned toward lion and said "duties are waiting for us, Habiibi. Come, time to work".

Soon the caravan was going back to the Brugge..

The caravan was under gates. All of travellers were surprised. When they were here last time all was preparing to crowning ceremony. So a lot of flowers and other decorations were in the town. But now.. all were decorated twice more.

"for a lost God sake! What is going here?" Nasr couldn't stop himself. Jasir tried to don't notice such words and asked calm "Do they celebrate this new queen so long? Seems they like fun, now I like them even more". This time a joke was hard to smile for second person. Fortunately for both of them a messenger arrived with letter. Nasr read it and smiled.

"My brother, that's new festive. Summer one. You wanted see anything interesting so I led you here to see that" He pointed on gates full of flowers. Jasir burst into laughing "I told you I like them! The good nations is this one who can find pretext for fun!". Nasr wrote few words back. He was so focused on it he didn't notice all his men changed clothes into white one, again. Thus when he said "we need to prepare our.." he didn't have to finish word, cos only he had to prepare himself. Rest were ready.

In few minutes white caravan full of laugh and music was passing gates.

The white caravan wasn't this time same even like previously. Now there were just a part of festive. A lot of colorful groups of persons were coming to the City. The crowd was huge. Also exotic animals weren't nothing extraordinary. Jasir was bit disappointed by this fact. He counted they will be in the center of attention. And now they were looking like one of groups who come here. Just a white color was something what distinguished them from rest.

"My brother! That's unacceptable! All are trying to overshadow our glory! Glory and splendor of al-Zarqai family" Nasr smiled, he knows his friend is joking. "Dear brother, feel free to punish them!" after these words both brothers burst into laughing. "I will! I will!"

"Just don't dance.. in person!" Nasr almost choked when he remind himself how "great" dancer is from his older brother. Jasir tried to don't listen this offense because he had no time to pay him back. He led peoples to the market, won some space for all of them. The white group was almost ready to begin its spectacle.

"Came to us! Camels, real royal camels of Zarqai family! Orient singers and dancers!" Jasir was in his element. That was real world of all real arabs - the market, where he could buy and sell all, and do that what is most important - to haggle. Soon a lot of peoples come to see what is going on in this white part of market.
