Treaty of Alliance between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Sultanate of Granada

At the city of Lisboa, the Sovereign, with the respective courts, the two kingdoms met to conclude a Treaty of Alliance, called precisely "Treatise on the Iberian League":

"Today, 19 march of 1312, gathered in council in this city of Lisboa the Sultan of Granada and the King of Portugal, in order to establish the following Treaty of Alliance."


Article I - Agreement of alliance

The Sultanate of Granada and the Kingdom of Portugal is now considered to be allies, give a solemn undertaking not to carry any kind of hostile action nor any aggression towards each other and undertake every effort to coordinate diplomatic and military.

Article II-Military Agreement

In the case of War Kingdoms will help the two depending on whether the war of conquest or defense.

1. If the war of conquest of the territories is against the rebels, a kingdom may pay the ally of the soldiers, but without any obligation.

2. If the war is defensive because one of the two kingdoms is attacked by another kingdom, the whole army will intervene to help an ally of the Kingdom of the covenant which is under attack.

3. If the two kingdoms will attack one another Kingdom with a "Casus Belli" (a good reason) the allied Kingdom must declare war to the enemy and bring all his army to war.

4. If the two kingdoms will attack one another Kingdom without a "Casus Belli" (a good reason) the allied Kingdom can remain neutral, but can not ally with the Kingdom is under attack from the allied Kingdom.

Article III - Agreement diplomat

A Kingdom of the Iberian League can decide its foreign policy, but the ally will always be informed about the alliances in the process of being signed.

The two kingdoms undertake not to create, support or encourage unrest in the territory of the other party by any means.

The two kingdoms shall agree on a division of the rebel territories of the Iberian Peninsula, which is established on the basis of territorial continuity and the possibility of having, for each kingdom in the Peninsula resources:

1. The Sultanate of Granada can expand to the north-west and in particular can conquer the provinces of:
Cordoba, Almeria, Malaga, Sevilla, Aracena, Badajoz, Caceres, Plasencia, Faro, Niebla and all provinces of the south-west, which is able to conquer.

2. The Kingdom of Portugal can expand to the north-west and in particular can conquer the provinces of:
Alcantara, Castelo Branco, Braganza, Porto, Santiago.

The two kingdoms are committed to create a fund that will serve in an emergency for the common defense. The fund will be 500 pieces of silver for each kingdom, they will be kept by a notary.

Article IV - Economic Agreement

1. Freedom of trade:

Is granted to anyone, citizens of two kingdoms, the same freedom of trade and non-discrimination with respect to local merchants in any territory under the dominion of the same kingdoms, provided that respects the laws of the place and not to create disturbances among the population.

2. Exploitation of natural resources:

The two kingdoms agree to the free use of the exploitation of natural resources of the territories of the Kingdoms.

Article V - Legal Agreement

1. Justice:

The citizens of two kingdoms who are guilty of crimes against the laws in force in the two kingdoms will be judged by the Magistrate of the Kingdom where the crime is committed.

2. Freedom of movement:

Is granted to anyone, citizen of two kingdoms signatory to this Treaty, the freedom of movement in any territory under the dominion of the same kingdoms, provided that respects the laws of the place and not to create disturbances among the population

3. Disputes:

The parties agree to settle disputes arising from this Treaty by an arbitrator chosen by mutual agreement and to accept as established by the referee.

Article VI - Breach of the Treaty

Each commitment and mutual constraint will decay at the same time that will be proven betrayal of one of the two allies to the detriment of the other, and if one of the two allies participating in plots and / or alliances with other kingdoms enemies.


Article VII - Iberian League

Every kingdom that became part of the Iberian League claims the legitimate right to any kingdom of the Iberian Peninsula to reign over the territories of the peninsula.
