"Never experienced that by real, Countess, I just faced the risk once.  Best thing, of course, is prevention by having dayly care of your weapons."

Giulia nodded at those words, seriously.

"But Brother Jacques, my first master, trained me for that too. No reason to throw away the remaining part, if still fit in any way for your defence.  Most of time a broken sword is better than an empty hand to try a parade, as example.
But when totally unarmed, if you can't flee, close the range and use wrestling; it's more effective than fists against an armoured opponent. At close range just the knife is really effective, longer weapons haven't enough room to work properly. Make a key on articulations of the armed arm of your opponent to reverse the situation. Not easy, but better than waiting for death"

After pondering for a while, she added - I agree, Baron Berton. I surely would prefer a sharp knife. Please, let me see, the key on articulation you are talking about.

Very well, Countess - said Berton -the basic of this wrestling style is really simple. Any articulation is a weak point of human body, when his free movement become impossible. Hold my right hand, or my right pulse, using your right hand. At the same time, press on my right elbow by your left hand. My only choice is to fall on ground to avoid severe damages. Same concept works if your attack has another articular target.

Giulia smiled, a flash of irony in the eyes looking at the ground. It was wet, sprinkled in some point by some almost melted snow.
In trying the key she replied - However, I figure you don't want to fall to the ground, isn't it?

Not my best wish, Lady,  stop the action mid way, please - said Berton .
Well, I see you got the point with that - added shortly later massaging his right elbow.

Giulia laughed amused - May we have a break, Baron Berton?
I would be glad to show you the stable. I didn't thank you enough until now for your gift.

She paused for a while, then she added smiling - The male horse saved me from King's wrath... I was quite late in the first battle for Frisia, few days ago, Baron Berton.

Berton laughed loudly "Harald's wrath is nearly legend, but I can't figure him really angry with you.  If it happens it's just theater, believe me. That said, a break to visit your stables seems excelllent to me."

Giulia laughed in turn - Maybe... a good theater, indeed - and laughed again.
Sometimes it seems his eyes are flashing as those of his god of lightning.
But, he named me Lioness of Flanders, so he is aware that I am not exactly a sweet kitten...

More seriously, she added - However, I have the freedom I need to have. In this respect he is really a wise King and I have just to thank him for this.

Giulia took the cloak that a servant handed her and motioned Berton to follow her.

While walking she said - We are waiting for a foal in later spring, from Auster, the arabic male you gifted me. My doubts are still how to mate the female instead, I remember your warnings about.

Congratulations to Auster, an it's wife - said Berton - About the female a bit of caution is welcome. But don't exceed. It seemed a good brood bitch, able to start a new race with a competent aid.

They came to the stables. Auster welcomed the arrival of Giulia with a neigh.
Giulia smiled, it was a splendid specimen and sometimes she was still amazed by his speed to gallop.
He had a precise temperament. He let she caress him, in fact, but he seemed restless.
Giulia looked at Baron Berton - He seems a bit restless, as if he needed to move. The last few days he has been closed indeed... - smiled and added - Would do you like to ride in the area here around? I'm sure Felipe would appreciate, too.

Berton bowed smiling "Sure, it will, and you don't know how much. Felipe seems to think that horses are just fat lazy dogs, easy to beat on the mile lenght. It hasn't the same endurance on the long run, anyway"

Giulia laughed, amused. She beckoned to a stableboy to saddle the horses, and said - We could go along the Rhine river, this will distract  Felipe from his race run, definitely. There will be other things to look around for him.

Berton shaked his shoulders. "Wo knows? If it will sniff a female dog around, we won't see Felipe for long time. Otherwise it will circle around horses to defy them. Listen to me, if that happens and someone is so silly to bet, place your money for Felipe winner"

Giulia burst into a silvery laught - I will not miss, Baron Berton.

Giulia burst into a silvery laughter - I will not miss, Baron Berton.

Then she smiled to herself, thinking how this little joke was proving the affection of Baron for his dog.
Instinctively, she stroked Auster.

Slowly they came out through the Rhine gate, leaving Andernach behind, just a small escort with them since the period was so uncertain, but, by the true, utterly useless.

A couple of turns and then the road was proceeding straight up to the river. Auster was restless and Giulia left him to go at full gallop.
Just the time to turn back and tell to Baron - Come on, please, Baron Berton.

I'm doing my best, against an excellent  horse with less weight to carry, my slim Lady - said Berton loosing slowly ground - I should eat lot less, maybe. But look how much Felipe is amused; it's your real opponent in this race.

They were almost to the river bank and Giulia slowed  Auster.
She turned smiling towards Berton - Let him believe he won!
She looked back at Felipe watching the water and added, laughing - As long as he didn't think about doing a swimming race now...

Then she came up and asked suddenly - Where do you have  spent your life until now Baron Berton?
