Do you know what is this my Lady?

Giulia was near a wide windows, looking outside, her thoughts being deep, far away both in space and in time.
Awakened by King's words, she turned her glance on him. Surprised in feeling intensity of his look, she approached him.

Looking at the paper she recognized the latest sketch she drawed by herself, after having forgot the original in Venice at the Cardinal palace, few month ago.
Suddenly, she remembered as Cardinal Friedrich von Luxemburg warned her about... "Vi consiglio di mostrare con oculatezza questo disegno, Madame. Specialmente ad uomo di Chiesa. Non è raro che possa essere male interpretato."

She tought for a while, but she was trusting in him... Thus, she replied, "I found this symbol during one of my journeys, far away at North. Until now I just know it's a very ancient mythological figure, but no so much more...."

She paused, her voice lowering in tone, but her eyes shining by curiosity, "Do you know more, My Lord..."

I found this symbol during one of my journeys, far away at North. Until now I just know it's a very ancient mythological figure, but no so much more....

Harald didn't change his glaze while listenning at Lady Giulia.

Do you know more, My Lord...

Still serious Harald winked his eyes.

My Lady, I warned you yet. Be careful, you're approaching a strange world. A world not so used to forgivness. The Old Ancient Northern Gods are not known to be the most indulgent at all.

Harald saw that his words were kicking the young Lady, so he relaxed himself a bit.

You are a very curious Lady, and this, is a precious quality in our world, but you have to be more careful to manage it.

Harald closed his eyes for a short moment. He remembered the old tales and the old beliefs the sacred men told him while he was a young northern boy. A picture jump back to his memory. One he disliked.

I was a little boy, 7 or 8 years old I don't remember right now. He started to say looking outside the northern window. As most of the boys at this age, curiosity drove my behaviour and my days. It was a period of starving for our lands. The winter has been one of the coldest ever seen, animals died and the lands were still frozen even if it was springtime.
I was part of a little wild bunch of young boys, we were 7; among us there was a nice one, his name was Olaf, he was one of my best friends.

Harald interrupted his tale for a while, his sight lost towards north just like he could see something more than the horizon.

They told us that he was sick and we believed them. One day at the sunset we were in the middle of the forest. We heard about a ritual, a not usal one. Our parents told us to stay away from the middle of the forest... but, as always, young boys are not known to be so obedient. We followed our parents into the forest. We found a good place to oversee the ritual, from the top of a tree. We saw ministers burn herbs, sang strange songs never heard before from us. And we saw a stone. A grey one with a strange form. We were smiling for our gesture until we saw our friend, Olaf, escorted by two of the ministers. He was blindfolded.. and he was shuddering. They let him lie down on the stones. They tied up his arms and his legs... than they spilled his blood from his wrists. The blood pured the land. Once he finished to move they beheaded him.

Harald let his words stay on the air for a while. Than, turning to the young Lady he added

I don't know what happened then. Three days later an uxpected warm wind arise from the south and the land flourished again. The famine ended three weeks later.  Miðgarðsormr was defeated once more. The snake that surround the world Harald picked up the picture and show it to the young lady is the first and most terrible enemy of Thor, the northern most prominent and beloved of our Gods.
Thor is the God of the men, the one we love more, the one who oversee to our future and the one we'll miss more after the Ragnarök will come.
It's written that Thor will die during the Ragnarök after he kills Miðgarðsormr, the enemy of mankind.

One of the symbol that Thor loves more is the oak tree. Do it means something for you my Lady?

Giulia had lissen King's words, silent.  No expression on her face revealed her deepest thoughts.
Maybe he tought she has been stricken, but the subject was really more involved...

So, she took some time more, trying to divert King's attention and she simply asked,"Tell me more about Thor and his oat tree, please, My Lord".

Tell me more about Thor and his oat tree, please, My Lord

Harald listenned to Lady Giulia's new question, than he turned his sight out of the northern window, again.

The Oak Tree is the hallowed Tree of Thor. It represents the connection between the world of the Gods and the land, the mankind. The Oak is strong, strong with its roots deep in the ground.

This is why oaks are soo important for us northern men, why they're so deep in our mind, why they are outside our Sanctuaries in the forests.

Harald left his words go away. Than turning again his glaze to the young Lady he continued You found a big Oak in the middle of the town square. What a sign!

We are deep in our Gods' minds, and they're deep in ours... the oak let ours world to be in touch.

Than he gave the paper to the young Lady.

Let Thor to deal with Miðgarðsormr. The son of Loki is not your business. He always tryies to find a door open and this he said looking at the paper on Lady's hands could be one... one you could regret for the rest of your life.

Giulia gently smiled for a while, King's words was again milder, even if not less impressive.
She thought it over very carefully, then she replied, "I have always admired oak tree, My Lord. Probably, I inherited this love from Vilfred, my tutor.
He was a man of Nordic origin, indeed. When I arrived in Andernach in last winter, I saw this tree and immediatly I chose it as the center of our new settlement. My first house is still in front of it, oriented to the Sud."

Her voice lowered in tone, "Probably, I still miss him...". After a while she added, "I think the oak tree is a symbol of the powerful bond with Nature ruling our lives, joining underground mysteries to sky shining light, our most distant origins to our highest aspirations. Human mind needs some symbol for representing its challenges, My Lord..."

Let Thor to deal with Miðgarðsormr. The son of Loki is not your business. He always tryies to find a door open and this could be one... one you could regret for the rest of your life.

She was still lissening the echo of her feelings in herself, deeply touched by those memories, when the King gave her back the paper.
She looked at him, silently, no expression on her face, no matter about he could believe she was worried or not...
Finally, she replied, nodding, but with an enigmatic smile, "I see, My Lord. Nevertheless, it's amazing consider as the same symbol, the circle, can represent evil and good in different cultures..."

Then, she lowered her look, seemingly embarrassed, but for the truth she was thinking about how much she was missing the ancient greek culture in present times.

Harald listenned to Lady Giulia's answer

Harald raise one eyebrow. Still serious.

My Lady, I have travelled the known world long enough to appreciate the different cultures we have. Although I wasn't talking about the circle, that in the northern beliefs means nothing of evil.

I was talking about the evil that always surround mankind and human being. We must be able to recognize its signs, and avoid it to enter in our lives.

Than looking to the young Lady he added

Don't be too eager in satisfying your curiosity. Not all the answers are made for men, otherwise we would be Gods ourselves.

Giulia nodded at King's words. She was well aware how much he had traveled in his past, "Sure, My Lord."
Then she smiled, slightly amused, and added, "Forgive me, My Lord. Probably I didn't explaim me in proper way. Indeed,
I was not saying that is evil in one culture and good in another one, but rather that circle seems to be a reference symbol for both good and evil....
In fact, you made reference right now to it, by using the the word surround..."

Don't be too eager in satisfying your curiosity. Not all the answers are made for men, otherwise we would be Gods ourselves.

Giulia lowered her look, blushing a little. The subject was quite difficult, even if she was also a little surprized. "He know how far I'm from any religion...", she tought in herself.

Then, she started to replied, "I will take in deep consideration you advice, My Lord. Since, I know this is my nature and my heritage... They push me to this behaviour, but..."
She paused for a while, then she added, looking again at him, "But, curiosity is neither thoughtlessness nor presumptuousness. It's simply a question of human mind, My Lord. It could don't find any answer, but it's still there..."

Harald smiled to the young Lady.

Indeed my Lady, he started, and your heritage is one of the most interesting, for sure, since you seem to be always in search of something new.

He smiled again. Knowledge is the most precious value we need to look for, don't stop to nourish it.

Than, turning serious again for a while he added But there is a limit to the human knowledge, the limit is not to beg for answers, the limit is the time.

He saw the young Lady hesitant. The limit I refer to, is the right time to have those answers. Some answers aren't made for men living on earth.

Giulia smiled brightly, "Thanks, My Lord..."

"Sometime I look at the time as a long rope made by hands, mankind hands... nobody see the beginning, nobody see the end... this is the mankind limit, but its also the manking strenght... or at least, I believe this...."

She paused for a while, then she added, "I think the same could be said about human curiosities, as well as about aspirations of wise kings..."

Harald smiled to the very last words of the young Lady.

Wise Kings... I haven't ever met a wise King... than, winking to the young Lady he said I have met wise men for sure, but aspirations are not made for Kings... a King can't allow himself to have aspirations he needs to stay aground.

Harald thought for a while to Lady Giulia's last words, than turning again to window he said Time... time has no limit at all. We, men, we are those who needs to put limit to things, otherwise our comprehension would be affected. Limitless concepts aren't made for men.

The circle of life repeats itself again and again, into an everlasting present without any time limit, this is why the evil is succeeding in enduring among mankind, this is why we need to be careful in managing our curiosity.

Harald left his words to stay in the air for a while.

The sun is going down. It seems our discussion has taken more time than what we thought..

Giulia nodded seriously. Thhat was his point of view and she had to take it into account somehow.

But then she burst into a silvery laugh. Then she said, "Sure, My Lord, and not for the first time, indeed. I hope you enjoyed this little pause from your usual duties. I really liked this opportunity to share with you some of my thoughts for the future and some about my heritage...
But duties are calling us now. I believe the time of the ceremony is approaching..."

Harald looked one last time to the northern window. He smiled to the young Lady.

Of course it did. It's always a pleasure to talk about my ancestors beliefs and my lands... Than he turned serious... but it's a sad pleasure, 'cause it reminds me what happened to my land...

After a short moment in which he thought to his beloved sister and the rest of his family, he continued

Very well Lady Aldobrandeschi, let's go to the ceremony to show the People of Andernach what it means to be Flemish he said winking to the young Lady

Giulia nodded seriously, remebering what he told her about some months ago. In silence, she left him the time to come back to the present.

Very well Lady Aldobrandeschi, let's go to the ceremony to show the People of Andernach what it means to be Flemish

At those words Giulia smiled glowing, "By this way, My Lord".
They came down to the audience hall, suitable prepared for celebrations. Sir Andries was waiting on the treshold and bowed promptly to the King. While entering the hall, Giulia gave a last look all around, going toward the new beautiful chair with carved armrest, in front of the Kingdom and fiefdom flags.

She stopped on its right, standing. Looking at the King and gently smiling she said, "I think all is ready, My Lord. I hope all is set according to Your wills".

By this way, My Lord

He followed the young Lady down the stairs, back into the audience hall again. The hall has been prepared for the ceremony while they were walking around the town and talking onto the upper tower room.

Harald looked all around well impressed by the quick organization. The hall wasn't so big, but it could easily contain up to 200 people. Big windows on the upper side of the hall let the sunlight coming in, giving the whole space a manigficient warm light.
The treshold was on the middle of one of the longest wall. Under the windows amazing tapestries with war and hunting scenes adorned the above wall. In front of it, under the windows, all the flags of the Kingdom.
On the treshold a simple but beautiful chair, the Lady's one.

At its feet a man was waiting. His posture, his dignity revelead Harald he was a warrior. He bowed to Harald. Harald stood in front of him.

Please Sir Andries, stand up. The man stood up looking with pride into Harald's eyes. Harald smiled. Than he posed his right hand on the man left shoulder. The man was surprised by this, unexpected, gesture. Harald smiled again.

I know who you are. I know who you were. You were one of the most noble knight of these lands. You fought with bravery and courage against us long time ago. Your honor is well known througout the whole Kingdom. Harald gave the man a short moment to catch his words. Than he continued. Your service here is again a great sign of your dignity and nobility. That's why I have decided the following things: Even if you'll stay at Lady Giulia's service you'll be made Lord Protector of Andernach bearing, since today, the title of Lord and all the rights in it included. And, from today till the end of your days you won't bow to me anymore.

Harald looked the man for a short moment than, smiling, he left him open mouth and turned to Lady Giulia. While he was talking to Sir Andries, she went on the treshold and stood on the right side of the chair.

I think all is ready, My Lord. I hope all is set according to Your wills.

Harald looked at the young Lady. Yes, it is. Than he sat on the chair.

Giulia listened smiling King's words to Sir Andries. She had learned to trust in that old man for some time: not so many words, but a deep experience and great balance in judging men. There were a few occasions when she needed to be not alone, most proper manner as much she could be independent.

All was ready outside the audience hall and inside.  Between windows, the chest was now open with her gifts inside. The rack on her right just a little behind the chair, covered by a velvet drap embroidered with the lion of Flanders.

Yes, it is.

At King's words, she nodded to Sir Andries and he came to the threshold. Local nobles, artisans and peasants began to enter the audience hall, a hum of voices in low tone, but joyful.  After some while, she looked all them and silence was out, in the waiting of the ceremony. A solemn moment before the evening party.
Smiling she turned her glance on these three men, standing beside the Mainz tapestry. They also were ready for their appointment and she gave them a nod.

Finally, looking again at the King she said, "My Lord, it's my pleasure to introduce you, once again, our warriors Bartolomeo Dandolo, Orso Björnsson, and Prometeo Cagliostro."
