{oRP} Eagle's Rest: A story begins
« on: 05 January, 2012, 12:52:28 AM »
The silence of a early January morning that graced over Aquitaine's eastern border was suddenly disturbed by a mysterious rider who apparently was making his way towards an old keep sitting watch over the old roman road for there was none else but the old ruin in his way. He had rode through the night accompanied but none but the sharp wind and wolves howls echoing in the distance and the day before yet not him nor his steed showed any sign of weariness or tiredness at all.

Just as they finally made it the sun was already showing its face, steadily climbing above the tree line shedding its light over the castle. With a quick glance the young man assessed the state of the battlements even before he dismounted. In his hands he held something resembling a spear or perhaps a lance, carefully wrapped in a piece of red silk cloth. Sliding gracefully off the saddle he gently unwrapped the cloth unveiling a Roman Aquila, the standard banner of the famed IX-th legion, an old heirloom of an age long gone. He stepped forth towards the gates holding the Aquila in one hand and with the other leading his horse. Taking a deep breath out of the cold morning air he embedded the standard deeply into the ground standing in front of the main gate and then with a smile on his face he whispered to himself "Welcome home ...."

The work progressed well as the days passed and soon the few shortcomings in the outer walls were no more, mostly thanks to the help of the neighboring village inhabitants who were more than glad to help, especially since the restoration of the keep would bring with it a garrison which in turn will deter the robber gangs that made this area their base from furthering their incursions thus rendering the area more safe, safety that has been somewhat lacking in the passing years, especially since the fall of the Western Roman empire and later of that of Charlemagne and with the abandonment of the castle guarding the region.

Of course there were still a few small issues to be solved here and there and the stables needed to be refitted with proper tools and the interior was still rather basic, though at this point it was the last thought on his mind. Leaving behind instructions about what needed to be done further he took his leave and traced back his journey to Bordeaux, only at a slower, calmer pace this time.

Only one winter had past over the Eagle's Keep yet so much had changed since he first arrived here, the outer fortifications were repaired and even upgraded in some parts where it seemed lacking strength mostly thanks to the aid of the local villagers who never ceased to show their appreciation especially since they were those who profited the most from having once again troops garrisoned in this castle as nothing would be a better determent for brigands and bandits who plagued these parts for years now.
