[orp] Travelling extensively
« on: 02 June, 2020, 04:50:07 AM »
Esmeralda had recently come out of her adolescence, although she was still regarded as, and felt, young. She decided that she would not confine herself to the limited existence of merely remaining in England, as much as she loved it. She set out to travel. She went to Flanders, then France, then Portugal, on through many empty towns. She had bought many provisions, but her youth lent itself to inexperience, which in turn lent itself to folly. She bought food where she could find it, and hoped that that would be enough. She was often hungry, but the wonders of the world fed her soul to such an extent that the hungers of the flesh seemed insignificant with the stream of joys feeding her soul. The world was wonderful.

Still, she soon noticed that she was getting hungrier and hungrier day by day. Around that same time, she noticed that the markets of the small towns she passed through on her travels were barren of anything that could relieve the gnawing pit that slowly grew in her stomach.

She used up the very last loaf of her bread one morning, and decided that she had to find a capital city. Her survival might depend upon it.

She trudged across flatlands, hills, forests, and mountains all day long, and by sunset she saw something in the distance. She could vaguely make out a city, that had to be Savoy! The flag confirmed it. She felt a surge of hope, and quickened her pace as she approached the city. Just a few miles remained, and she could already see it well because it was positioned visibly in the mountains! She was tired, and nearly starved, but she could make it. She would make it, too! And before her head hit the pillow, because tonight there would be a pillow for her head to hit, she would be in Savoy. Then she could rest, eat, and stock up on food for the next stretch of her journey...

Esmeralda arrived at the gates of Savoy, and slowly used the last of her willpower to push herself in. The guards barely gave her a second look, deeming her as no threat. And they were right! Even if she had been cruel enough to want to threaten this lovely place, she would have been in no condition to.

Tired, dirty, and starving, she pushed herself forwards one step at a time. She saw a market up ahead. A busy one! There was sure to be food there! She pulled out some silver from her bag. Enough that any market vendor would know that she meant business, but not enough that every market vendor would immediately notice. She hastily bought the closest food to her, enough to fill her well. She paid for the cheese that she had bought, and was going to sit down on the side of the street away from the market to eat. She barely made it out of immediate sight of the market though, before she collapsed. A fresh pang of hunger had hit her, and gone immediately to her head, fast as a wave of water in a tropical storm. And like that wave brought salt and sea creatures to the coast, her wave of hunger brought an increase to her already throbbing headache, and a fresh sensation of nausea.

After staggering slowly to her feet, she grasped a wall for support and tried to clear her head. She slid down the wall, ending up crouched and back on the ground. She grabbed for her food, and wanted nothing more than to cram it in her mouth immediately. Thankfully she still retained a fragment of common sense and refrained from doing so. She knew that if she did that, then she would immediately vomit all of her food back up again, leaving her just as hungry as before, and sicker besides.

She slowly ate the cheese, first a bit, then a bit more, then a bit faster, and using this method she finished the last bit ten minutes later. She took a deep breath. She was filled! She quickly walked to a tavern nearby and the plump, stoney faced bartender pointed her quickly to a room that she could stay in for free, as he saw that she was not fit to haggle over prices.

She collapsed on the bed, and was asleep before her head hit the pillow. There were no dreams for her tonight. Just sleep. The last time she’d had a bed to sleep in had been in an abandoned town that she’d slept in on her way here. There had been cobwebs, spiders, rats, and the whole experience had almost made her believe in ghosts. This bed was many times better.

Hours later, she awoke feeling well rested. She set out to explore the lovely town. Now that she was feeling well again, she could truly appreciate it’s beauty. This was the reason she loved travelling. She saw large, small, quaint, grand, and all manner of other kinds of places! That made up in full for the hunger that was all to common when she was on the road.

With much joy, she wandered about the town, trying and doing and seeing everything. She planned to stay in Savoy for at least until the morning of the day after tomorrow...

OOC: This is an open role play topic, so if you want to join in feel free to do so! I would love to encounter new friends on my travels, etc. :)

"Hello, dear visitor," said Alexandra, the queen, when she saw the young girl strolling by the gates of the Palace. The newcomer looked refreshed, and seemed eager to see all the sights and experience all the beauty of the mountains of Savoy. Alexandra was always glad to welcome visitors traveling to enjoy her kingdom. "I hope you have a great time in Savoy, and let me know if you find our hospitality comfortable and suitable to your needs." She waved at the beautiful young visitor and went back to the Palace to tend to business.

Esmeralda turned as she passed by the Palace. She noticed a lovely woman, who must have been the Queen, who had also noticed her.  She listened as the Queen spoke, then “Thank you, Savoy is lovely! Especially after coming out of the surrounding wilderness!” Esmeralda replied. She dipped her head politely as the Queen turned back to the palace. Then Esmeralda continued walking, she was leaving tomorrow so she had to see and do everything. Of course Esmeralda knew that this wasn’t the last she’d see of Savoy, she would have to visit again. It would be a shame, bordering on a downright sin to leave Savoy and never visit again. It was so peaceful and serene. But next time, she planned on coming to Savoy clean, refreshed, and prepared overall. She also planned on getting a brush somewhere. Long black hair against pale skin is pretty, but not when that hair has taken on the shape of a rat’s nest.

The Queen of Savoy asked her maid in wait to give the new visitor some flowers as a warm welcome to her stay in her kingdom. Her maid in wait ran out to the market, picked a beautiful bouquet of wild flowers native to Savoy, and went about looking for the young lady, so she could give it to her as a token of friendship from her beloved Kingdom.

A woman who introduced herself as the Queen’s waiting maid approached Esmeralda and gave her a lovely bouquet of flowers courtesy of the Queen. Esmeralda thanked her and told her to give the Queen her thanks. Esmeralda then hurried off after the maid departed in order to prepare for the journey of today.

With hard work and lots of calluses on her feet, Esmeralda had made it to Venizia the previous night and there she had slept. Venizia, like Savoy, was very beautiful, but a different kind of beauty.

Esmeralda awoke feeling well rested. She decided to explore the markets before setting out, and possibly to buy a loaf of bread to replace the one she’d eaten the night before. As she looked around she noticed many people and things and was hard pressed to take them all in.

With a sense of anticipation, she set out for the markets. Her last stop before travelling onwards.

This night, Esmeralda had slept in an empty Bohemian village. Today, she set out for the capital. She made her way across the terrain. She was thinking about why she had set out on this journey in the first place.

Esmeralda wanted to see everywhere. She wanted to be able to say that she’d been to every country that diplomacy would allow, that she’d seen the whole of Europe. She wanted to meet new people, try new things. She wanted to be someone who would have stories to tell all the little children that would come into her future shop for sweets. And she wanted to know that she had gotten herself the very best life she could. How could she know that for sure if she didn’t explore and see the sorts of lives people in other kingdoms lived? Well, if all went according to plan, she would soon know that for sure.

She was going up to Sweden, through Denmark, down through Bulgaria and Kiev, all the way to the Eastern Roman Empire, through which she would cross to get to the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Seleucid. Then, she would cross up through Arberia, and go through Sicily, then back up to Serbia, and then she would go home. Home. London, where she had first been introduced to the ways of this world. She would go home.

Esmeralda stopped in Denmark for the night. After buying a pretty souvenir from the market, she set out to earn a bit of money or to train before she went to bed.

Denmark was lovely, and it had a great market selection, which in Esmeralda’s experience usually meant that working conditions there were great!

Tomorrow she would head to Sweden, then down to Prussia. She was looking forwards to seeing it all.

Esmeralda stopped for the night in Hungary. She was tired and worn out, so the bed in Pest was welcome. She would commence her journey tomorrow.

After many more stops on her journey, having seen countless things, Esmeralda finally returned home. She looked back on some of the highlights of her journey; Savoy had been lovely and very welcoming, Konstantioupolos had had more scrolls than she had had time to read them, Sweden had been cozy and warm despite the cold weather she had encountered in some regions, and there had been many more that she had seen and enjoyed. She reflected on the trip home. She had passed through Savoy again; and had seen a battleground in the city, much to her dismay, and she had passed through France and Flanders, and several sea regions. It had been around a month since she had been home, but here she was at last. Home.
