Marriage between Roberto Alfaro and Gracia Mendoza
« on: 02 November, 2017, 12:26:26 AM »

Bishop Teodoro walked down the nave of the Burgos' Cathedral with Carmela ,meticolously inspecting every square foot of the structure. After making sure that all the decorations and the flowers were appropriately placed , the Prelate spoke to his servant.

"Very well. You can open the church doors now. Let the bells toll and set free all the doves from the bell tower. I'll wait in the rectory , call me when all the people are in."

It had been more than a year ago when Gracia had met Roberto. He was visiting Burgos in a bussiness trip and she welcomed him into the city.

He invited her to visit his kingdom, and she did it as soon as she had an opportunity. Gracia had loved the norman countryside and the people. Each time she had visited Normandy, some neighbours had always welcomed her, and had written to her offering everything she could need. She had been invited to study and train, to own a house there and to take part in daily life .

The only way to thank all that kindness was to work with them and help the citizens in their projects. Normandy had at that time not many citizens but very active and great workers. They were always engaged in different projects. Those who say that Normandy was not a very active kingdom are wrong, because Gracia had seen with her own eyes how hard they all worked on behalf of their kingdom. (Well, now there was a new theory that said that hard work was not important.....)

After a long day working, Roberto and Gracia used to go for a walk along the beach, under the stars, before going to rest.

During those days they enjoyed long conversations about every possible subject. Their friendship grew.

Roberto, with hundred of small details and big ones as well, managed to reach Gracia´s heart. One of the many presents and gifts that Roberto made Gracia was to appoint her Countess of Avranches, a way to thank her for some help she granted to Norman citizens during the Great Plague of 1316.

Their responsabilities and duties made them spend time far from each other, but they were always in contact. And a few months ago, Roberto asked Gracia to marry him. Their relationship was not a caprice, it was solid and beautiful.

This is what Gracia was thinking about while she was trying her  bride´s veil, surrounded by her mother and her maid of honour and dear friend Lady Teacher, who had personally grown the flowers for the church.

Gracia wished that all their friends could attend the wedding ceremony. Her fiance´s loyal men, their neighbours, the portuguese and aragonese brothers, the Papal Guards she had been fighting with, the knights of Santiago as she was the Great Prioress of the Order,  the good people they had met since they were in this world...and her lovely and sweet twin sister Clara, with her husband.

That the Angel of Mount Saint Michelle protects this marriage, she thought, and why not, a red dragon as well.

Having heard of the wedding between Lord Alfaro and the Lady Mendoza,
Mr. du Vallon, put on his finery, borrowed a carriage/coach from a neighborly noble, and with his gift box set off for Burgos.

Arriving at the place of the reception.  Mr. Pierre du Vallon looked himself over.
He had made sure not to wear any of his normal insignia.  He wasn't even wearing the typical French colors.

Upon entry to the reception, the steward / servant at the door asked him for his name.

Hoping that the doorman was not particularly keen on certain foreign heads of state, Mr. du Vallon responded,

Lord Bridgewater, the Baron of  Norde Monte Cristo

Following that with a hurried 'where sir, is the gift table?'  'This is quite heavy, and I also need a drink after such a lenghthy journey.'
At the same time, handing the doorman a small satchel of silver.

With that Mr. du Vallon, or rather Lord Bridgewater slipped into the reception, with minimal attention.

Staying for a while, he sat mostly in farther reaches of the room.  Where he could watch the festiviites, without standing out.

As gifts began to be opened, he quietly took his leave.  Not before, however, pausing by the musicians and asking for the song after next to be an old sweet ballad, that used to be sung throughout France, and Normandy.  Handing the musicians a few coins.  Pierre, quietly but quickly, got into his waiting coach and headed for home.

When his gift would be opened later by Mr. Alfaro,

It would contain two finely crafted short swords.

With the simple letter,

From a friend on your wedding day,
These blades were forged by the finest craftsman in France.
To your good health and happiness,
May your marriage find you both blessed by Teos

Verily, verily, verily...a joyous occasion to express thanks to all: friends, Kings and Queens, and beloved readers who are joining Gracia Mendoza and Roberto Alfaro; in this special wedding ceremony to be celebrated by our venerable Bishop of the Holy Theological Church, Chaplain of Burgos and Great Inquisitor of Rome, Teodoro Sidonio.

After, a truly long lasting wait...it seems that finally Roberto Alfaro is pleased to wear his long silk shirt woven by the delicate hands of his bride Gracia Mendoza...a star above the skies that he found in the beautiful heavens of Avranches, Rennes, Cornouaille, Evreux, Vannes, Thouars and every past region of his beloved Normandy when taking his nightly walk and meditative time.  Now in exile - a story to be told in another occasion - he sees the skies of Burgos and finds the comforting presence of his beloved star near him.

Roberto Alfaro is wearing a long silk shirt woven by the delicate hands of his beloved bride.  He is ready also to wear the special gift given to him that it is kept on his special silk bag hanging on the left side by the hip line of his strong leather trousers ...a beautiful diamond ring exclusively chosen and given as a gift by his soulmate Gracia.

A union of two spirits and two souls spurred by their individual desire and willingness to care for others - those who are less fortunate - and keeping strong on defense for the basic universal values of Justice and Prosperity to All, created by Theos. Their Faith, Their Love and
their Action to be together today and joined in this Holy Sacrament of Matrimony, that is the "covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses..." and  to be joined spiritually in mutual agreement in the attainment of their individual goals and purposes, and as Couples to be in the dynamic for mutual enlightenment.

Beloved Citizens of All Kingdoms, if you stop by please Enjoy too ...this cherished moment that Gracia Mendoza and Roberto Alfaro can humbly offer you.

To Love.  To Life.  To enjoy and share.

Carmela found Teodoro in the rectory , lashing out against a closed cabinet. The Bishop seemed to have lost his legendary temper  ,at some point he started to kick violently the heavy door of that piece of furniture.

"Open! You , stupid piece of swamp wood , open!"

"What's the problem , Father?"- said Carmela with some hesitation in her voice

"You see? My wedding record book is looked up in this (CENSORED BY THE AUTHOR) cabinet! I can't celebrate anything without recording it! Oh poor me , what a shame, I'm going to loose my face! Please Carmela , bring me an axe immediatly "

Carmela put an hand on the prelate's shoulder
"No need to get angry , Father. Look at this"
The servant gave a dispatch to the Bishop

After reading it , Teodoro calmed down
"Well , so I suppose no one is going to get married today. Please , load our great cart with all the items we stored in our warehouse. Another prelate will celebrate this function , in more peaceful times. And ,Carmela , we need some serious armor..... By the way , how much is a full plated set? "

Carmela answered him.
Teodoro started to cry like a baby.

The bride was waiting in the lobby of the castle with her maids ,  Mother and her Maid of Honour Lady Teacher.
Captain Santacruz  had to escort them to the carriage which would bring them to the Bishop´s Palace, where  the ceremony was going to take place.

The groom and his men, the guests, their neighbours, would be there. King Giovanni, who had given his approval to this marriage would be at the entrance of the Bishop´s palace, to welcome the bride and bring her to the altar. He was the closest figure to a father.

When Captain Santacruz entered in the lobby, instead of offering her his arm, gave her a note. His face looked too stern.
She read the note quickly, took the veil off, handled the beautiful bouquet of flowers that she was carrying to a maid and said:

"I need to talk to my husband to be . We cannot get married today"

"Mi señora doña Gracia "- a maid talked to her-" if you aren´t going to marry now, don´t let the groom see your wedding dress. It brings bad lack..."

"Bad luck? What happens in this world is bad luck!"

Gracia had a last look to the magnificent patio, which had been prepared to enjoy the wedding banquet after the  religious ceremony.
"Not yet" she thought, and sighed.

When Gracia and her retinue arrived to the church, most guests were outside, all of them talking about the dreadfull news.

"What are we going to do now, Roberto? she asked, taking his hand.

"We shall do what we must".

"Then,  no wedding, no honeymoon, there is not much time left"

"But we are certainly going to travel, my Star"- Roberto said -" We have to leave now if we want to arrive on time".

"Yes, Vexin is far from here."

Gracia had received very worrying news about last events abroad. So many of her friends  were in danger.
The vultures had been flying in circles in too many places. Death and destruction, disease and poverty followed war.

The farmers saw their crops burning, the sheperds their cattle killed, the families their homes destroyed, the shops plundered, the children crying .

A lot of words danced in her mind... arrogance, ambition, thirst of power, greed, vanity, revenge, abuse, threats, blindness, evil....

And yet, no news about place and timing for the wedding ceremony.  Roberto and Gracia had suffered so many difficulties; it seemed as if their love was tested many times, in different circumstances.

Meanwhile, in the English Channel....

On the third day of the coldest month of December a valiant battle was fought between the real true Normans and the usurpers of the Kingdom of Normandy. https://www.medieval-europe.eu/index.php/page/battlereport/28224

This would be the first time that Roberto and Gracia  will celebrate New Year´s Eve together.

They will open their home for their friends and relatives to have dinner together and receive the New Theos Year 1318.

Toledo , Cardinal Palace

Cardinal Sidonio stood still before the cabinet containing all the Archdiocese's records.
The Prelate spoke to Carmela , his longtime servant , and his voice was exasperated.

"What ?! Are you telling me that this cabinet also didn't open?"

Carmela lowered her gaze , sincerely mortified
"Eminence , I can't explain what happens. Every time Lady Gracia and Lord Roberto show up in a Cult House for receive their marriage , our documents seem impossible to retrieve. It is far beyond my understanding."

Teodoro roared
"All people in Europe can get married , even heatens. I can't tolerate further delays in my best friend marriage!Five months of waiting are enough , their love was sufficiently put to test."
Then he calmed down , making some order in his  thoughts.
"Well , this time we will do like in old good times. I will produce a valid certificate of marriage to be sent to the Holy See's Chancellery , so anyone can salute Gracia and Roberto as Wife and Husband. When the problems with our bureaucracy will be solved , we will procede to the ordinary registration of the Sacrament. I will take this burden on me."

Carmela smiled
"As you wish , Father"

Toledo's Cathedral ,some days later...

Teodoro stood in front of the Cathedral's  greater altar . Before him ,the Bride Gracia and the Groom Roberto were visibly excited. The Cathedral was full of people , yet the silence was nearly absolute.

After the choir ended his liturgical chant , Cardinal Sidonio began to speak

"We have come rejoicing into the house of the Lord for this celebration, dear brothers and sisters, and now we stand with Roberto and Gracia on the day they intend to form a home of their own.

For them this is a moment of unique importance. Marriage is an crucial step in a person's life , when one choose to gift another one with a substantial piece of his freedom and his life. The most precious of all gifts.

So let us support them with our affection,  with our friendship, and with our prayer. as their brothers and sisters. No one dares divide what today Teos unites!

Dear Roberto , dear Gracia, have you come here to enter into Marriage without coercion, freely and wholeheartedly? Are you prepared to accept children  from Teos and to grow them according to the law of Immanuel and his Church?
"
[/b]

Both the groom and the bride said : " Yes , I do"

Then the Archbishop went on with the liturgy

"Roberto, do you take Gracia as your wife? Do you promise to be faithful to her in good times and in bad times, in sickness and in health, to love her and to honor her all the days of your life? "

Roberto answered " I do!"

And Gracia, do you take Roberto as your husband? Do you promise to be faithful to him in good times and in bad times, in sickness and in health, to love him and to honor him all the days of your life?

Gracia answered " I do!"

Then Teodoro proclaimed

"May the Creator of all men, women and all other beings that dwell under the sky, the god of judgement, the god of mercy, the god who joined together our first parents in paradise, strengthen and bless in the Saviour the consent you have declared before the Church, so that what god joins together, no one may put asunder.

May the Lord bless these rings, which you will give to each other as a sign of love and fidelity.  Let us all rejoice in this moment of goodness of our Creator and praise His name. Amen and Alleluia!
"

After a brief moment of silence Teodoro winked to the bride and the groom and wispered with a smile
"C'mon you two, kiss!"

With Lord Roberto and Lady Gracia now finally wed, the people burst into cheers as they clapped for the newlyweds. I watched intently, ogling at the beautiful bride. Happiness deeply etched on her face, tears began to well in my eyes. "Finally," I muttered. I was relieved and extremely jubilant at the turn of events. My wishes turned to prayer. I felt compelled to kneel and bow my head for an ardent prayer for their happiness.

The King and his Court were seated in the front row of the nave and the words of Monsignor Teodoro burst into a thunderous applause.

The King approached Sir Robert and Lady Gracia and embracing them blessed his union by thanking theos of Lady Gracia's presence for the kingdom and for Sir Roberto's presence for his bride.

His words then resounded throughout the church:
"Long live the newlyweds!"

A moment of light shown from the West in the early dawn. Alexander VII had just completed his morning prayers and was looking Toward the sea beyond the sea and "The Lion's Wall."  That is odd he thought to himself as it was common that the brighter light should be in the East at this time of day. Then he heard a whisper of music and bells blown on the wind. The tune was instantly recognizable to His Holiness and made him joyful at every time he heard. Today the faux sunrise from the West and that music so ephemeral and fair wispering on the breeze struck a chord of regret. He had envisioned this moment so many times.  A sigh escaped him uncontrolled. Then he smiled as he remembered who it was who was experiencing the greater joy of Teos first miracle after creation, sacred union, and smiled.
Taking to kneel where he was that moment, Alexander VII signed himself and made a reverant prayer to the heavens and the Living Teos, reaching out in with his spirit to touch the couple so far away.

" In the name of Immanuelle, the pure and faultless sacrifice I rejoice in the knowledge I have been given this day. The celebrants and their faith are a star in the darkness of this world. They have chosen to shine for a lifetime without regret or seeking promise of a perfect peace to their future. May today's Light be eternal and bright as they now take flight together as my dear dear friends. Teos bless and keep you both in His heart and may His love shine through you both as an example to all."

Knowing they could not hear him, he trusted in the heavens that the benediction would mark them all the same. The rest of the day His Holiness whistled.....putting several of those around him to wondering what he knew and why such processional music was his choice.
Faith Defines All Things; their remembrances clearly defined make them living custom.
