The opening of Midsummer celebrations

As usual in late morning Giulia met her pupils, Rianne and Mathijs. They brought her two wonderful flower garlands.
Giulia smiled, pleased - So the best is... Then she laughed, shocking the head - Once again I couldn't say which is the best!
She gifted them two little velvet pouches adding - To open just after midnight.
The she listened their report on  on the preparations.
Mathijs was still impressed how the ovens had baked bread, relentlessly, until that morning. On the other side, Rianne was somehow worried about the wood and wheat stockpiles.
Giulia gently smiled and stood up approaching the window. After a while she turned and replied - Don't worry, Rianne. Fields have given wheat last year despite the massive bloodshed of the Great war, they will this year as well. Harvest time is close. Seasons alternate during the year, safe and inexorable, like the sun and the moon during the day.
She paused, then nodded as answering to a question inside her soul - This evening, in leaving the Markt, you will come with me. Be ready to spend the night on a boat offshore of Brugge.
At the arrival of the Lord Chamberlain she dismissed the pupils.

After sunset, Giulia, riding Auster at slow trot, went to the Markt escorted by Her Royal guard.

All the streets were paved by colored courtains, in the best Flemish tradition, flags of the eight fiefdoms of the Kingdoms, coupled with the Black Flemish lion: Brugge, Andernach, Ostfriesland, Westfriesland, Liege, Thüringen, Lüneburg and Münster, the newest one.

When the Belfort bell started to beat all eyes turned on the high bonfire in the middle of the square, in front of the Belfort.
Everything was ready for the opening of Midsummer celebrations. Giulia headed to the platform set up for the opening where a lively fire was burning in a brazier.
The Lord Chamberlain bowed to the Queen and then handed her a torch ready to be turned on.

Giulia took it with a slow and measured movement, dipping its top in the brazier.
Then, with a vibrating voice, she said once again as in the past years - Beloved People of Flanders, Ladies and Lords, Honorable noble Guests from distant lands arrived in a spirit of happiness and friendship, it's Our great delight to welcome you all here in Brugge for Midsummer celebrations.
May the summer solstice be the wish of prosperity for all you all the years long.
May the Sun, at the peak of his power, warm your hearts, giving you joy and happiness in next seven days.
May the moon, his life companion, silent illuminate your steps in next seven nights.

Finally she threw the torch on the pile of wood.  Flames lit up the night in a overbearing way, lighting with flickering reflections Giulia's silk dress and her long red copper hair.
The music began and people started to dance around the bonfire.
She sat on the throne prepared on the platform, looking all around.

Jacob took a sip of his beer while staring at the bonfire that his beloved Queen had just lit.
He arrived this morning. He had travelled from Andernach where he had worked the wheatfields the past week.
But as Jacob was staring at the flames his mind was occupied with something else then the comming
festivities.
Summerfestival, an event everyone had looked forward to, just like Jaccob. He had met old friends throughout the day, drinking beer, wine and brandy. All was great until he got the message that Flanders' allies needed help against some rebel natives.
His ship would sail this evening and Jacob was not amused. Those rebels would be very sorry they picked a fight this week.
While pondering about the comming fight and missing summerfestival, he looked at the Queen. She was standing near the bonfire, the light of the flames making her long copper hair look like the fire itself. A Queen to to follow into hell and back.
Jacob poured the rest of his beer in his mouth and trew the wooden mug into the bonfire. For good luck.

Hearing the announcement of the Third Midsummer Festival, and knowing it will be couple of days.
Primula was excited to go a festival, not just any festival, It was the Third Midsummer Festival.
She had heard of the 1st two Midsummer Festival.
She was very curious, since it is her first time partaking a festival.

Primula prepared herself for a long trip from "IDE-DE-FRANCE,FRANCE" to "BRUGGE ,FLANDERS".
She announce to her fellow countrymen, that she will be unavailable till July 2.

But before she left, she had to do some errand.
1)She had to sell enough food at the market in the morning.
2)Opening my inn inventory to my friend(?), trading partner to Juliette Benner.
3)Enough food to live in Brugge,Flanders& sell some in the market till the end of the festivities.

After a long travel, I manage to reach Brugge ,Flanders.
To see people, not only from Flanders, but from different countries.
The festivities mood were good and light.

In my time there, I just remember what were my plans there.
1) To see and reach Brugge,Flanders.(1st time)
2) Train my very best in the training ground.
3) Recruit new members to my trading company.
4) Sell my product and hope some will buy it.

Though staying in an inn, I would pay a lot of silver, for a comfortable stay.

Learning that a native attack will happen in an allied country.
The mood is somewhat a bit heavy(?)from my view.
I debated whether to go or not.
Since I don't have the equipment nor the skill, to make it alive in that battle.

I decided to just stay to my plan and take a vacation in Brugge,Flanders.

Hoping for a successful festivities and good tiding for all.

Meanwhile in Biarn - Savoy:

Despite the Midsummer Festival celebrations, Queen Guilia and some of her vassals - Lord Dandolo, Lady Valahia and Visir Corneliu - joined the Flemish army in Biarn.  Obligations concerning the Midsummer Festival were delegated to the vassals who remained in Brugge. They were consulting with King Permenion of Savoy and other leaders while the Flemish army waited.

Irimescu Aura , Jan de Vlamic,  Maude De Brissac and Jacob van Teylingen sat around one of many small campfires. They all wore full armor and had their weapons within reach.
Jacob rummaged in his haversack and pulled out a bottle of brandy.
"Let's have our own little Midsummer Festival celebration. This campfire is our bonfire and I have something here to fill our hearts with joy." he said with a with a grin on his face while pouring the brandy into the mugs of his comrades in arms "It's Hughes Brandy, the best brandy in Europe, at least, that's what Max Hughes told me."
Jacob raised his own mug and toasted with a smile "Like the traditional sword dance of Midsummer Festival, we will have a sword dance of our own today” his smile changed to a more determined look “And let us make those rebels regret they asked us to dance."

Jacob just woke up from a very deep sleep. It took a while before he realized where he was.
He lay wounded on deck of a ship that was entering the harbor of Brugge. He probably woke up because of the activity on deck and the sounds comming from the quay.
The last thing he remembered was the fighting in Biarn. How they fought against all odds. How they hardly got away to fight another day...
He remembered his words at the campfire and smiled sadly. To no one in particular he murmured "Remind me to take some extra dancing lessons next time."
Behind him some one said with a semi-serious voice "Or next time bring a sword to a sword dance."
Jacob looked a bit silly at his trusted battle axe. A real smile appeared on his face. The smile turned into a loud burst of laughter... that hurt...but felt great nonetheless.

Finally at Brugge, Esmee was deeply worried.
The cart had broken down during the journay to the capital and she risked to lose all that bread she crafted, side by side with her beloved Alain, at the castle bakery in the  previous week.
So she missed the opening and also the call to Biarn. She was not able to stop to blame herself while waiting at the harbor in Brugge the Leger van Vlaanderen back in Brugge.
In seeing the royal ship, she had a bad presentiment, soon confirmed when sailors docked: the Queen had been severley wounded in Biarn.
She rushed to her side just to hear her murmuring to prolong Midsummer celebrations till her complete healing.
The surgeon told to Esmee: she need peace and rest, please help me to persuade her as best as you can.
Esmee nodded: I will.
Later she entered the parish in Brugge to find confort to her worries.

Alain smiled as the familiar waters of the English Channel lay before him.  Standing aboard the main deck of his sleek and powerful ship The Lady Esmee, he could see the farthest rocky point of the coast of Normandy: a landmark that meant home--and the arms of the wonderful woman the ship was named for--were not far, now.  He longed to have her tender touch applied to some of the wounds he bore as a painful reminder of his part in the losing effort in Cadiz.  Lucky to be alive, and even luckier to have her waiting for him in Brugge, he ordered his First Mate to keep her at full-sail until they reached the currents that would bear them home the fastest.

Back in his cabin, he tried to forget his aches and pains and focus on Esmee and the Midsummer Festival he was missing back home. What fun it always was to take a long walk around the city, arm-in-arm with his beloved and experience all there is about this magical time of year!  His smile returned as he recalled it was at this very festival, not too long ago, where he gave some of his most serious efforts at winning the love and hand of his dear Wife.  He knew this festival would always be magic to both of them.

He made a few entries in his journal and tried to get some rest, but sleep evaded him.  Frustrated, he went back on deck just as the stars started to fill the darkening sky with their dazzling display and thought how the lights looked just like those of the thousands of lit torches all around Brugge on a Festival night...

His smile returned, again.

Jacob carefully stepped off the gangplank onto the quay. He was relieved to feel solid ground under his feet. Travelling by ship was not his favorite thing to do.
A small crowd gathered around Queen Guilia. She was badly hurt. He saw Lady Esmee and a surgeon close to the Queen.  She’s in good hands.  He didn’t want to disturb them, so he limped on.
Having seen Lady Esmee, Jacob realized something else. He grabbed a dockworker by his sleeve and asked "Any news about the Lady Esmee, lad?"
The dockworker looked a bit confused at Jacob "But Sir, you just walked past her."
“I meant the ship. You know, Lord D’Arcy’s ship!?”
“Ah, of course… eh… sorry Sir… but no, The Lady Esmee hasn’t arrived yet. ”
Jacob looked away. He was a bit worried. All he could do was wait. Well, if he had to wait he could just as well look for some distraction. He headed for the Grote Markt. He had just limped a few meters when he collapsed on the stones of the quay.
Some men pulled him up ”You’re not fit to do any celebrations, Sir. Come with us. You need to rest. That’s an order. From Lady Esmee.”

As the first, golden arrows of  morning sunlight streaked across the sky,  the morning mist lifted and Alain could see the the Port of Brugge-- completely encircled with ships and craft of all types, bearing flags and standards from all across Europe.   In less than an hour, he knew he would finally be there, among the throngs of people the Midsummer Festival always attracted to the beautiful city of his birth.  In less than an hour, he would (hopefully) be resting in the arms of his beloved Esmee.

The smile would not leave his face, now...

Esmee spent a few hours in praying in the parrish, both for her beloved husband gone in Cadiz for fightig and the Queen, really worried for both.
That time gift her a bit of peace to her soul, but she was fully aware her heart will not stop to worry till she will see her Alain again.
The scent of candles was filling the air.
The sunset was approaching, so slowly she stood up and headed toward the big portal for leaving.

The very second Alain set foot on the dock at the Port of Brugge, he was surrounded by several people who all started to talk at once.  Unfortunately, each had a different message or update for him, so he could only make-out bits and pieces of it before he could take no more and broke free from this small, but vocal mob.   The next several hours were spent visiting the market and tending to some business that had been put on hold while he was away.  All this time, he kept an eye out for his beloved wife, but she was nowhere to be seen.

During this trip around town, his driver gave him details on the injury situation regarding Queen Giulia, his trusted Lieutenant Jacob, and the others who were fighting in Biarn while he was in far-off Cadiz getting his share of punishment on the battlefield.  "Some way to start the Festival!", thought  Alain.  He hoped they all recovered soon, and hoped his own injuries would not be long in healing, but he had a feeling pain would be his neighbor for a while...

The sky was just displaying its colorful, evening palette as they passed the parish church.   Alain spotted his beloved Esmee leaving through the large, main doors and had the driver swing-over to that side of the street.   He called-out to her: "It would be an honor above all honors if you would share a ride with me, lovely Lady."

His smile was bigger than ever.

Around midnight on the night of Midsummer celebrations opening Giulia headed to the Zwin with her royal guard and her two pupils. A ship was ready to bring then along the canal till the  mouth of the Scheldt and then to the North sea.
The original project was just to spend the night on the sea water, but Savoy was in alert status because  a natives revolt in Biarn. So one part of Leger van Vlaanderen have been called to arms.
Once arrived on the coast they saw the awaiting boats, ready to sail  before the tide changes.
But Giulia's thoughts were still elsewhere. She motioned to the captain and the slowly the ship's prow turned toward North-West, then stopped.

Giulia looked for a long while in that direction, feeling for a while as outside the time and the space. Her lips were moving without really pronouncing any word. Only after she took a velvet pouch out of her cloak and poured the content in the water with a large motion. Then she motioned to Rianne and Mathijs to add the content of their owns pouches and  stood silent with bowed head.

Then suddenly her expression changed and said - This night you will come with me in Biarn. It's time you feel on your skin how is  a battle even if you will not allowed to fight.
She smiled in seeing the excitement of her pupils and told - True, a good way to celebrate you...
Her eyes flashed, her thoughts now to the incoming battle.

The natives battle in Biarn has been very tough, despite the bravery of all warriors. Giulia was barely remembering the very last moments, the critical hit to the body of one native, but suddenly a new one had chased her: her coup attempt in the head to stun him and then a such intense pain at her side to lose consciousness.

Several hours later, she had awakened just long enough to notice the roll of the ship to the waves and murmur deliriously - Lioness, black, yellow... forest.
Back in Brugge, right after her condition allowed her to keep again the control, silencing physicians of the courts, she had head to the her most preferred forest region looking for peace and time to ponder, prolonging Midsummer celebration one week more.
A bad feeling was gripping her heart and in fact the happiness of Midsummer celebrations was broken again by a natives revolt in Anhalt at the Flemish border. A victory thanks to Flemish People and to Flemish allies as well, but that evening in dressing for the Midsummer celebration closure she went to the balcony looking at the sky.

The air was mild and the the moon still in full shape, just starting her run to disappear. She murmured - Sun and moon, moon and sun, always, cyclically for eternity,  eternally indifferent to the fate of humanity, blood and darkness, happiness and light...a round dance...

A knock at the door, the Chamberlain bowing and saying all was ready  at the Markt once again. Giulia smiled in nodding and headed to the main court.

Jacob stepped out of his house onto the busy street. He straightened his back – ouch, that still hurts –  and started to walk in the direction of the festivities.
As he walked he thought about the past year. It had been an eventful year. Joined the Flemish Army, fought many battles all around Europe, knighted, met many new friends, baptized…… an eventful year indeed. The last two weeks were very interesting. He became a believer of Teos and prayed like…. like…. well he prayed a lot. However, he was not sure he had himself baptized for the right reasons.  Did he really think Teos was the only one or did he still believed there were other, powerful entities within nature, the elements?
While pondering about his life, Jacob reached the crowded Markt. He looked around for people he knew and, not unimportant, his first drink.

The last evening, July, 9th

After many days, the last day sunset was arrived. The sun was turning red the clean sky and soon dark would come.
Escorted by the royal guard, Giulia bordered the Zwin toward the harbor on the sea where everything was ready for the last celebration: two high bonfires were nearby the sea,  to be burned all night long.

Giulia headed to the platform, smiling all around. Once again a brazier, Lord Chamberlain bowed to the Queen handed her a torch ready to be turned on.
Once again, in that last night, Giulia took the torch, dipping its top in the brazier.

Then, turning to the crowd, with  vibrating voice, she said - Beloved People of Flanders, Ladies and Lords, Honorable noble Guests, two times seven days and seven nights have been spent in the spirit of happiness and friendship, two times seven days and seven nights have seen Flanders celebrate Midsummer despite many events outside and inside Our Beloved Kingdom.
This night, the last night, these huge bonfires honor the sea lapping at our shores, the sea allowing us to be the people we are as well as our fertile lowlands.
May this light always illuminate our arrivals and warm our hearts at every departure.

Finally she threw the torch on the piles of wood, from right to left and soon the flames of two bonfires lit up the night in strong way.
She looked all around, smiling in seeing her people, proud of all them  and finally said  - Let final dances begin!

Later, she entered the Throne room, where many guests were waiting there for the ceremonial closure formula.
Standing she said with vibrating voice - Ladies and Lords, My Honorable noble Guests, We saw two times seven days and seven nights woven together like a garland of flowers in Midsummer.
May more light and less dark, more dark and less light, in a circle like a garland, accompany all us
silent until next Midsummer. Joy and prosperity to you all!
And now let bards' night begin!

She sat on the throne and curious looked all around, ready to listen a few good music and a few good stories.

This was the first time Jacob attended the final evening of Midsummer Festival in the palace. The years before he always celebrated the final evening at the Grote Markt with the commoners. This year, since he was a knight, he had the privilege to be among the nobility.

Jacob felt somewhat uncomfortable. He wasn’t used to this kind of environment. He didn’t really know how to behave. He had no problems with the nobles when fighting side by side with them in blood and mud. But this was totally different. He felt a bit clumsy. He wished he had paid more attention in the past to the lessons from his mother about etiquette.

Jacob moved to a pillar, a bit out of sight, observing the other guests while thoughtlessly touching the brooch on his tunic.
