Going further (CRP)
« on: 14 October, 2015, 09:22:59 PM »
Sweat running down the face, naked shoulders, chest...  Never ending road led Budrys further the the mountains of west Alps. He knew somewhere further ahead was the end of kingdom of Savoy that he traveled for several weeks now.
He remembered journey like it was long dream filled with visions of glory and cruelty of supreme godliness and humanness as well, or was these two just aspects of the same? That was still not clear... Never clear... He wiped sweat from his eyes as if it would allow to see clearer into him self.

Glorious panoramas of Azure Coast welcoming him like hands of midwife welcomes newborn seeing  world first time. Mighty Rhône leading further as clear path of child's life predicable and true surrounded by fertile walleyes defending from danger embracing motherly... Bloody fields of Savoy repulsing and cruel like joining adulthood always is...

Pain in the muscles reminded Budrys distance that he walked more clearly then any memories could...  He stopped for a brief moment by the mountain stream and look into him self in clear water. Priest looked older, more rough, body noticeably scared and far more muscular, long black hair shaggy and unkempt. It was long till Budrys had soft bed to sleep onto...
Budrys drank water from his handful and opened his bag. In it was his armor, a bottle and smaller pack with a cheese and breed. Budrys was eating slowly... He missed black bread of his younger days yet those days was no more...
Where now? To the mountains... Mountain held the answer... Or at least the question... Question burning too brightly to be asked in words...
Budrys stud up sun was going down... He will fallow stars tonight...

Stepping on the rock felt different this time...  One more hole in Budrys boots?... It was as if it had one more in every county he crossed.  Priest examined the damage this time sole it self was gone... It seems I crossed the border into Milan. High wall like mountains surrounding his passage still obscured fertile plains of North Italy but sole shoved passage more clearly then any sigh would. Budrys tried to tie it up with with the piece of cloth... Failure... Yet boot without the sole was better then no boot...  He walked on...

Another traiding party was hurtling between the kingdoms trying to leave dangerous passes as quick as possible and paying little attention for lone traveler. One suspicious stare to judge was he a mountain robber spy and thats all attention given to Budrys.

Soon they ways will part for fertile Milan was not high priests goal. As soon as he heard melodic sounds of their Italian language filling his heart with memories and so he knew what is to be done in next crossroad... That was probably the first time in this journey Budrys knew direction before taking it. Souring legs will take him north.

King Bolete... Ironic name... Priest sliced head of the mushroom into the boiling water then another and another, 42 mushrooms went that way as Budrys prepared lunch for his new acquaintances.  They were pour farmers pilgrims traveling to the temple in  Viena. They were sturdy folk bringing their flocks in and out of the mountain valleys each year.  Peasants had only vague understanding about high rituals of the temples and preferred mountain songs worshiping gods of evergreen that nourished barren mountains   making them into meadows every spring. Their gods drank milk not blood...
Budrys listened them sing, echo of the songs blossomed into magnificent symphony of autumn mountains. It was thanking for successful herding season as did they fathers from time immemorial....
Stew was ready pilgrims shared it, as well as a beer....  It pure air it tasted like a life...

Mushroom king who had to loose the crown and be tested by fire so that his essence nourished the living... Budrys recognized something in it and sang with pilgrims...

Walls of Vienna showed all signs of rebuild.  Fresh bricks still have not been burn by the sun enough to give that uniformity older buildings displaid.  Gate house was decorated by pattern of black burned bricks displaying pagan symbol. Budrys was closing the gates with a band of pilgrims.

On the way here priest heard the news of resignation of most bellowed Queen Sofie. Some said it was due to to heart pain of loosing her dear friend Karl (his lengthy funeral was now almost legendary even among non city dwelling folk)  other argued it was some pressure of foreign power. Budrys listened such speculations in silence. Thinking about reasons that would not occur to them.

Power is most heaviest of chains that takes one without pity giving the mask. Mask of greatness ? No not really for true greatness is burning withing it is like a force of nature flowing without halting...  So it was not it...  Mask was not for person wearing it, but rather for one seeing one. Power for greatness was like a picture for a flame. In pictures flame look constant, one can understand its form and extent. When element is understood it looks reasonable, less frightening, universal. And just like real flame can burns its picture in a moment, so can greatness burn its mask...

Second boot finally given in. It is strange how he managed to endure mountains, but good road leading to the city was to much for it. Last several hundred steps Budrys marched barefoot.

He heard guards in gatehouse talking about imminent arrival of Primicerius. Hearing exited voices of theirs Budrys knew he will need suitable mask... And went to the tailors district unhindered.

Senses started to came back to Budrys. First it was pain fallowed soon by cool linen cloth  freshly watered pressing to his forehead. Soon he was making out sounds too he heard familiar voices talking in German. Concerned one was Sofies another more confidant and reassuring was unknown for him, yet context of the speech made it clear that this was the doctor. He was telling to lady that fever is braking now and even thou injuries were great recovery is almost certain.

Memories of the Halloween nigh came back to Budrys. Hills of Ostrava with dancing shadows and moonlight was before priests eyes again. He remembered man tall and mighty as mountain standing before him with his large bardiche. Budrys attacked him strongly yet opponent proved him self to be quick as well as strong dodging three straight blows and forcing priest to step back a bit to avoid retaliation. In another night that might have mean annihilation of Budrys, but not when the spirits of the ancestors returns to walk the mortal realm. They entered to priest and primordial rage filled his heart. Mighty blow with the daneaxe and blood was spilling forth from giants stomachs another one and he fell on his knees.  Even with terrible onslaught enemy manage to defend him self to stand and to wound the priest yet every strike he made was answered by two stronger ones. Soon he was unconscious ready to receive final blow. That would have been his end if not the youngster with the halberd who ran to Budrys in wain hope to defend his fallen comrade. He tried his best one even sreching a bit priests chin before he was overwhelmed.
Budrys then ran to face another enemy nobleman with great Hungarian axe. Strange was that man even wielding Hungarian axe he fought with it as if it was Russian bardiche so he scored miss after miss until turned to bloody mess it he laid before the priest. Next target was trembling man with an War hammer he tried to fight but for each blow he made two twice as strong ones was paid for him. Soon he turned and ran while Budrys went after him yet only couple steps latter as clouds were passing throu the moon  he felt again his wounds... And then he woke up here.

Budrys asked for mead and dranked it deep. Soon if not today then tomorrow he will be up it is still not the time to join ancestors...

Italian temples fallen...  All that was created by the man withers and die...  Pride of the believe that the  the marble walls and stone statues are tool fit enough to capture the glory of Gods that encompass all that is natural. Nature...  The Grand Mother of chaos...  How can a mortal with mind that understand perfection only in symmetry of geometry represent You...  Oh... The naivety... Replacing warm moving flesh with the cold stone carved by a chisel;  smell of the living flower, of lovers breaths, of the mighty ocean waging eternal battle with the land by simple fragrances or incense...

Budrys went further he walked across the mountains of Apennine  further from Urbino  where he was met with silence and hostility to the south west...  Somewhere not far from the hill slope he noticed a convoy moving with the banners and songs too...  High priest stopped and watched them as they were getting nearer.

Higher and higher Budrys climbed into the Alps. Reaching the tallest slope of the magnificent white mountain from where he saw lush green plains far beneath. Here in the cold wind he realised the answer to his question. Priest could not put it in words, but in his heart he knew. And thus he stopped walking and listened...    Long and hard...    Then he took a stone and put it on a rock, then another then another more and more and more. Until the pile grew high. He then took of his traveling pack and taken some ladder from it and put it on the stone pile. Then as the sun slowly set to the west - the side of the green plain Budrys made small fire then took his knife warmed it in the flames and cut his own right eye and threw it to the fire as the first sacrifice to bless the new birth of the sacred flame. There will I dwell. Far so very very far I go and now the journey is done.

Priest took the fire on the torch and carried it home...
