Second Midsummer Festival Week - June, 22-28, 1315

The day before

It was early morning and a sunny and pleasant day was expected.  Giulia was taking breakfast in her private apartments.
She was lazily taking a while for herself before starting that busy day: Midsummer celebrations in Brugge were upcoming.
But she was pondering on all events happened in the past year, in Flanders and all around. They were so many... happy and sad, pleasant and harsh...
some to be proud of, some others on which still ponder a lot...
Then she focused her thoughts on Flanders, how many new buildings in order to improve the welfare of the Flemish people.
She nodded, murmuring - The Flemish People, My beloved People... - She was so proud on the commitment to their kingdom and each others.
Many celebrations were planed all around, more or less official, the most important in Brugge, where foreign guests were expected, too.
But Midsummer was a celebration for all, the Sun and the Moon don't care on the rank.

She noticed some childish footsteps sound in the hall and smiled in hearing the knocking at the door of her pupils - Rianne and Mathijs, come in.
They had grown so much in the last year, they were no longer children. She gave them a questioning look in seeing Mathijs carrying a woven reeds basket.
No time for asking what it was inside, a low bark revealed their surprise. The twins softly laughed - He is not able to wait until tomorrow, Your Majesty.
Giulia lifting the drape smiled in seeing the sighthound - He is wonderful, My dears. But, he will need to wait at least tomorrow for his name! - she added laughing.
Right after she dismissed them in saying - Well, please go with Sir Andries, he is in charge to check the two towering piles of wood prepared nearby the sea at the entrance of the harbor. I'm sure you will enjoy the visit.
Then she called Meinsent - Please, ask to Lord Chamberlain to come. This morning, I'm waiting for some visits and we have to manage last details for Midsummer celebrations.

I woke up very early, as every morning, since I have three farms, cows, and while I was working I stopped because I thought the letter sent by the Queen.
I was very proud of both of you that my brothers Flemings, how many sacrifices, how many worries and how much suffering you pay with satisfaction and pride.
I thought Great and close-knit people we are, how many things we will do together to make our nation great.
Then I returned to work happier than before

apprezzarne i tanti lati positivi; quest'anno però i suoi pensieri erano distolti dai soliti preparativi e addobbi: aveva

The city of Brugge was raging as never before; artisans shined their windows showing off the beauty of the local,

tourists swarmed among the stalls in the downtown streets and inns serving food and liquor as they were

elsewhere.
Lord Prometeo Cagliostro, former Vassallo of Brugge, had become accustomed to this climate for years and had

learned to appreciate the many good points; This year, however, his thoughts were diverted from the usual

preparations and decorations: he had in mind only one person who for some time had captured his heart and was

now decided to declare publicly, of fronts to friends old and new, expressing all its their feelings during the

festivities in his city. But the temperament of the warrior, who never had retreated in the face of an enemy, this time

proved fragile and fearful towards a situation which was not used, although encouraged by the certainty of love

reciprocated his promise.

The days flowed fast and despite the various commitments that daily she occupied, Alexxandra was really happy.

She looked up from the papers that littered the desk and stretched nicely.
She got up from her chair and walked to the window, pulled back the heavy curtain that filtered sunlight.

The sun .. a pleasant warmth warmed her face, Alexxandra smiled.
"..the  Midsummer .. is almost imminent.."

she muttered to herself and as a flash she thought of all the good and bad events that had passed .. the long wars but also the great satisfaction .. the role of Vassal of Brugge that the gracious Queen had assigned to her ..

smiles .. .. laughter.. new projects that passed from paper to construction sites .. new citizens who knocked at the door ..

much work still...

Then she went back to the desk and picking up the cards, let the sun illuminate the room and her thoughts

Ms. Angry-Pickles rides into town from her home in the next town atop her trusty pet cow Boom.

Boom moos with excitement and starts dancing.

Ms Pickles shakes her head and goes to see who lives at her old home in Brugge.

"Time flies"
thought Heinrich leaving the graveyard.

The first morning of the fair got up later than usual, taking a bit of idleness that was not his usual practice.
First, after a quick breakfast, he had decided to honor all soldiers who died in war by his side. Starting from the room of the order of the black unicorn and then to the city cemetery where he took the opportunity to pay tribute to all those citizens without whose role no kingdom could thrive: artisans, farmers, laborers and many others.

The time. A word which reflected a lot lately.
Going down one of the streets of the capital he could see new districts make up recently or were still under construction. As well as in various fiefdoms of the realm.

Walking aimlessly Heinrich met many new faces. Some busy in their daily work and others intent on enjoying the fair with banquets and performances of tumblers .
Passing through the crowd of people many recognizing him stepped aside others mistook him for a petty bourgeois or noble of lesser rank, for then apologize with bows.
"My lord, you should not walk alone" said a guard intent on making the rounds along with other four.
"You are right, but I like to walk for once without giving... show" said Von Hohenlohe nodding a puppet show intent to ape the nobles on horseback.
He greeted the soldiers and then returned to dive into the mass of people, smells and new roads.

Pretziosa that morning woke up in good spirits. She did not live in Brugge for a long time and so this was the first time she had a chance to see the show.
She was dressed quietly choosing a simple green dress, her favorite color, she gritted her long dark hair in braids according to the fashion of his homeland and had completed its preparations wearing a rich pendant in silver filigree tied around her neck with a black velvet ribbon.
Today was an important day for her, not just because she'd finally had the opportunity to spend time with her new fellow citizens, but mostly because she had an important announcement to make to the Queen and the whole city.

She was Thrilled by the events that have involved in the near future, she was almost jumping out of his home and showing a smile brighter than the sun itself, and she was directed to the house of her betrothed.
For the first time since they met, now so long ago, she would have had the chance to walk quietly through the streets in his company and for the world would allow him to escape, at the cost of kidnap him!

In a moment she had reached the house of her Lord and she knocked gently on the door asking to be announced.

David had just finished yet another grueling day of work on the fields. After returning from the war it was a bit 'closed in on himself, he felt the need to distance themselves from others to reflect and try to forget all this horror and violence.
Back home I found a letter, the royal seal was unmistakable. David had a deep respect for the queen, strong woman and at the same time kind, always had a wise word of encouragement to all in need was always in the forefront.
The letter informing the start of the midsummer festival. After months of monotony felt the strong need to get going again. He closed his gear in a closet, took a few coins from the purse hidden under the mattress and closed the door.
He marched good step, destination Brugge.

Budrys prepared for a long journey to Bruge. He longed to see again that odd country Flanders. Even thou visited  many times this land alluded him. People here were happy yet strange they fallowed pagan customs yet didn’t knew their Gods. Still they felt magic of nature in love inspiring Midsummer flames as purely as devoted priest would. Maybe that childishly pure faith that peoples of Flanders has was the true reason why Budrys desired to be there this night, or maybe it was just longing for Queens company...

Esmee, returned in Brugge from her far castle in Thuringen, was walking in Brugge streets, looking how coloured and festive the Capital was due to Midsummer Festival.
She was really thrilled looking for the incoming meeting with her husband-to-be in the main square.

Still in her personal studio in checking with the Lord Chamberlain last details at the Midsummer eve, Giulia received a scroll on the imminent arrival of the Primicerius Budrys.

She gently smiled in reading it and said - Lord Chamberlain, please be sure he will be properly welcomed at his arrival in Brugge. I'm so glad to meet him again and Midsummer is a so proper opportunity for this!

Midsummer was a very special celebration and despite all events in the capital and all town around, there was a sort a sacral reference to Nature. Something fitting so well with her most hidden studies and past interests. Something so natural for that man coming for the far lands of Lithuania.

At the gate of Bruge, Budrys was met by lord chamberlain of Flanders and escorted throe busy city streets to Royal palace.  He watched cheerfully at spectacular decorations that was prepared for evenings celebrations giant pyres ready to triumph over darkness. Budrys smiled at some citizens that got tired and decided to go to sleep early just in front of tavern and at young giggling couples that cant wait for a night when they can quietly slip away from flames to search blooms of ferns. In front of palace small community of Flemish pagans was gathered, Budrys stopped for a moment for blessing and warm embrace and proceeded into a inner yard

Alain's thoughts were focused as he made the short journey from his home in Mons, Hainaut to Brugge.  The Midsummer Festival had begun and he was going to be a bit late.  Business and military obligations had kept him from being there for the very opening, but he did not worry about that. Knowing he would be enjoying this event with the woman who owned his heart kept his spirits high.

As a matter of fact, the thought of his beloved Esmee kept him going countless times when he was far from home and feeling lonely.

As he approached the shining capital city of Brugge, he could not help but nudge his steed to go a bit more quickly. He could not tell if his heart or his horse were racing faster...

Well, thought Berton disembarking, a bit of fun here will be an excellent medicine for my mood.
Less good if my nice friend will knock out me again on the beach, of course.
