They continued following the ritual.
Fixed steps and scenic assaults, then free steps and real assaults.
Few experts could have said for sure what was show and what was fight.
The blood painted several times the blades.
After an exchange where he seemed victorious, the spanish collapsed.

Giulia had lost all notion of time. Apart from the ceremonial crossing, neither spared their shots, though refraining from procuring deep wounds.
The crowd around watchful at each their move in full silence.
Both were beginning to feel the passage of time and effort. Giulia, slightly dazed, fail to ward off the last two  Berton's hits.
The shot in the left arm distracted her for a while so that the immediate next shot at the thigh made her stagger slightly.
She found herself to bend on that side, but she tried to exploit that position to find an opening to the guard on Berton's right side. She saw him bend too and then collapse on the ground.

Breathless, she looked him almost disbelieving, the linen shirt  glued to her body for the effort and the fire heat.
The crowd finally broke the silence, applauding. Giulia turned to them, smiled and nodded her head.
Then she thrust her sword into the sand and headed quickly close to Baron, in the meanwhile looking for the Court surgeon.

She put her hand lightly on his shoulder, watching him closely, and said in a low voice - Berton?
Then she added - You may be accompanied to the Palace as soon as possible if you wish. Do you want it? I will come later to visit you.

Berton was too weak to give a proper answer, but a smile appeared on his face.
His pain seemed beaten by sort of satisfaction.

Berton didn't answer but she saw his smile, reassured, her contracted expression lay down, at least a bit.
She nodded, smiling back and turned around seeing the Court surgeon not so far to walk straight toward them.

- My Queen, you should ...
She didn't give him time to continue and replied - Bring him to the Royal palace with the utmost care, Sir Elbertus, later I will come to visit him in person.
Later, Sir, it's not yet time  to rest for me.

She stood for a moment in silence, calling back last energies,  put on again the cloak handed her by a page and then trying to find the usual fluid movement as always she walked up straight to the platform, to sit on the throne prepared there. At her nod music started and immediately  figurative dancing began around the two bonfires.
The evening was charming and Giulia let the music flow inside her, slowly finding some rest.

It was already night when she stood up. The music stopped. Giulia took a chalice handed by the Lord Chamberlain and said  - My beloved people of Flanders, My Lords and Ladies, My honorable Guests.
Seven days and seven nights woven together like a garland of flowers in Midsummer.
May More light and less dark, more dark and less light, in a circle like this garland, accompany us
silent until next Midsummer. Joy and prosperity to you all!

A small bonfire on a raft was illuminating of light even the sea. She smiled glowing. Then she step down the platform, she could now return at the Palace.

She galloped fast, escorted by the royal guard and immediately went to visit Baron Berton.
Catching her breath, her eyes impatiently asked Sir Elbertus who promptly replied - He is resting  now, My Queen. You should also...
Giulia shook her head with a smile that, despite its kindness, was not leaving any argument and dismissed him.
She sat on a chair beside him and looked at his rest. She smiled and stood watch over him until sunrise.
