Title: [ORP] Cafe de Brugge
Post by: (RIP) Charlotte Seymour on 26 November, 2012, 01:15:49 PM
While Charlotte was out walking one morning following breakfast she came across a quaint cafe, and entering she was impressed to find herself in a coffee shop that was clean and warm and welcoming.

Hello my Lady, bowed a young man as she entered, looking around. Would you like a table? Please allow me.

The waiter fussed about a little, guiding her to a table that was in one of the windows overlooking the street. Sitting Charlotte thanked him, smiling.

Could I have a coffee please, she asked, glancing at a menu that stood on her table, picking it up and browsing quickly. Also I'll have toasted tea cakes.

Bowing again the young waiter turned and hurried off to deal with her order, returning quickly with her coffee, and a few minutes later the teacakes.

Enjoy my Lady.

Charlotte sat quietly looking out on the Brugge street at the various people passing by, horses and carts, children scurrying by, and couples walking past, a lady with her hand through a gentleman's arm, another couple holding hands. All this Charlotte observed as she drank her coffee and ate her teacakes.

[ooc: This cafe is open to all citizens and visitors alike. Please feel free to call in, have coffee, meet people. Let's show the world how Brugge loves to RP]

After a long, tiring journey, I led my horse to a cozy little cafe. I dismounted from my horse, making sure that my cloak didn't open. I made it down to one of the iron rings in the wall of the cafe. Pulled the door of the cafe open. Bowing the head, I entered the barroom inside. Looking around the barroom, I went to the bar. On a table by the window, I saw a lady sitting. Greeted her with a bow of the head.
Arrived at the counter, I called the innkeeper and ordered a carafe of red wine. With a wine goblet and decanter of red wine, I installed me at a table in the back of the barroom. Occasionally I let my gaze wandering in the direction of the lady sitting at the window. On the basis of her clothes, I tried to find out to which noble family she belonged.

Lady Charlotte Seymour sat enjoying her coffee, eating her tea cake slowly as she had taken from her purse the notebook. Reading her notes, the plans and figures she had many ideas in her head about her new home. She planned to move into the house on the canal in the next few days.

Glancing around her Lady Charlotte saw there were new customers now sat in the cafe, and she wondered if she should hurry and finish her coffee and tea cake and leave. Putting aside her notebook Charlotte ate, her eyes going to the window, the street outside busy.

Wondering why the young Lady got so nervous, I called the Innkeeper.

Dear Sir, would you be so kind to prepare a room for me. I hope you've still one with a view on your magnificient garden. Do you also look after my horse? I thank you for your kindness.

Again looking to the Lady at the window, I asked myself what made her so nervous. The way she's eating her cake so quickly... I bowed a little forward and tried to see outside what would have caused her nervosity.

Charles enters the cafe.
He finds a seat in the left corner of the room.

Pausing on his way there to tip his hat to robrecht and charlotte, charles takes a seat and begins glancing over the menue.

Looking up at the newcomer entering the Café, I recognized the Judge of Brugge. I nodded back to his greetings and looked at the Lady sitting by the window. Trying to see if her nervosity was caused by the entering as presence of the Judge of Brugge.

Charlotte finished eating her tea cake and putting down her notebook picked up her coffee to drink it. Looking out the window she felt eyes were on her and she glanced round in time to see the Judge enter. She looked at him as he tipped his hat and scowled, turning her head away from him, remembering his poor manners in the tavern. As she turned back to the window Charlotte saw the man who had been sat a while watching her. She drank her coffee and set her cup down, looking at him.

Is there something I can help you with, Charlotte asked the man watching her, wondering who he was.

Charles raises an eyebrow at the haughty woman's dismisal of his polite greeting, but otherwise says nothing.
After perusing the menue for a time, Charles raises his index finger indicating he is ready to order something.

Adressed by the Lady sitting at the window, I bowed my head greeting her.

Maybe you can, maybe you can't, My Ladyship. I apologize for starring at you, but I thought I had seen you already before in Brugge. The clothes your Ladyship is wearing, tells me you belong to a Noble family of Flanders, only I don't get it figured out to which one.

While trying to satisfy my curiosity, I looked to it that my own Noble signs stayed well covered.

Taking my head of the table, I putted it back on, tipped it greeting the Lady.

If her Ladyship will accept my apologizes, bowing the head, but the Innkeeper prepared my room and I'm very tired from the long journey I had. When her Ladyship is staying overnight as well, we'll be able to continue our conversation in the morning.

Taking her hand, I kissed it, turned away and went to the stairs to get to my room. Brrr... her hand was very cold!

Lady Charlotte listened as the man finally spoke to her. His words were somewhat confusing, and when he assumed she was from one of the Flanders noble families she looked at him closely wondering who he was. On his standing, expressing a need for sleep Charlotte nodded and quietly spoke. Rest well Sir.

Watching the man leave Charlotte wondered who he was, a little unnerved by him. Glancing at her coffee and the empty plate Charlotte waved the waiter across, asking for the bill. After paying Charlotte stood and left, curious about the stranger, but walking briskly back to the tavern she was staying.

Wakened by the sun rays on my face, I stood up, washed and dressed myself. Went downstairs to the bar and asked the barkeeper if the Lady near the window from yesterday was still sleeping. He answered me that she didn't stay overnight at his Café, but left yesterday after I went upstairs to my room. I asked him if he could tell me to which Noble family of Brugge she belonged, but he didn't knew either. What a pity. Anyway, I asked for the bill and to get my horse ready for the journey. I payed the bill and waited till my horse was ready for leaving. Before leaving the café, I turned to the barkeeper: You're sure you don't know to which family the Lady belongs? The barkeeper answered: No, Milord, I really don't know. While the barkeeper answered me, I looked sharply into his eyes and could only see he ment what he was telling. I left the café, mounted my horse and left Brugge, heading to Breda, my homeland.

Post by: (RIP) Aelfred Ulricsson on 18 March, 2013, 04:11:47 AM
Aelfred felt quite relaxed after his cross channel journey. The sea had been remarkably calm the past two days, and nothing had disturbed the short trip. He had been tending his bees for several months up until this latest foray. With him, in his two sturdy chests, he had a plethora of small bottles and jars full of the sweet, sticky substance so many people loved. As well, after chasing out the bees for the end of the season, he was able to collect large quantities of their wax, and this too was neatly packaged in old pieces of cloth, and then lain carefully in the chests. The young peasant had heard of the revival of Brugges, and the new excitement its King had created. He had decided that it was time to revisit Flanders himself to see what all the furor was about, and in the meanwhile find new markets for his produce.
He gave the two young lads two copper coins each and thanked them for their help in hauling his chests. Glancing up at the sign over the door of the building they had directed him to, he opened the door and stepped inside. He looked around swiftly, gauging the establishment's price, felt it a bit above his pocketbook. He weighed the small coin purse he carried, then thought to himself "Why not, I should make some good coin when my goods sell. I shall treat myself to a hot meal, and maybe a bed with fresh straw."
Brushing the grime from his travel stained work shirt, he crossed the threshold and strode deliberately to the main room, where several patrons were already enjoying an evening meal. He chose a table to one side, not wishing to be too conspicuous, and quietly awaited while the serving girl finished with the other guests. He listened carefully to the surrounding conversations, but was unable to make out the substance, his grasp of the local language minimal.
As Aelfred waited patiently, he noticed a painting on the wall above his table. It was of a young man, dressed as a King. But what struck Aelfred was the likeness to the Danish merchant he had met last year, the friend of Sofie. His name too had been Harald Magnusson. Strange how the world played tricks like that.
After an evening here, he would go to the market and explore the new Brugges on the morrow.

Aelfred couldn't help but stare at the painting, unable to get over its likeness to the fellow he had met. When the serving girl finally made it to his table he asked her. "Is this your new King?"
She looked momentarily confused, and then as she deciphered his English accent, she replied in broken English of her own "He is very kind to us common folk, he was once one himself."
Thinking of his own sovereign in Scotland, and his unwillingness to be a "king," Aelfred chuckled. "Our Scottish ruler, whom we just call Bruce won't let us call him King, is King Harald the same?"
"Oh no Sir, he does at least answer to being called King, but he does not look down upon we common folk. He understands how hard we must work, and appreciates our efforts."
"I believe I have met him, once long ago, and he was as you describe, very friendly. To think I have shared a table with two different Kings now, 'tis not something my father would have ever have dreamed of"
"Now, what is your name? And did I mention you have the most lovely green eyes I have ever seen?" Seeing her smile shyly, surprised at the unexpected compliment, Aelfred knew he had achieved what he wished. "I think I will have some of the bread I smell baking and a piece of that cheese Brugge is famous for."

Harald entrered the Inn.

The day has been full of things to do. Organize the delivery of goods to Danmark, try to address the lack of food in the southern provinces of the County, manage the builders to let them go to Breda to raise a Tavern and a Market for the future development of thet region.

The end of the day surprised him still outside the Palace. The was windy, as they were used to be at the beginning of the springtime in Flanders. Clouds full of rain were approaching from the west, wthin a couple of hours it would have been an heavy rain.

He saw the Inn Café de Brugge and decided to get in to have a quick supper. He likes to share ihis time with his fellow citizens.

When he was just entered, a couple of Guards on his rear, he looked around the hall to see if there was someone he knows. The young blonde barimade saw him, and quickly reached her Lord. After alittle bow she said "My Lord, happy to see you here at the Café. Can I help you, my Liege?", "Good evening Dear Lady" Harald started "I would like to have a supper here for me and for my Guards too. These two young folks here followed me all day and they deserve to be well feeded" he concluded smiling. "Of course my Lord. Where do you want to sat?" the young barmaid asked. Harald gave a glaze all around the hall looking for a good place, he likes those in the corner not to be surprised on his back and to better follow what happen in the hall.

Looking around he saw a young man, alone. He thought a little bit to that man, as he felt he have met him yet. Didn't remembering who he was, Harald decided to reach him to his table.

"Greetings Sir. I'm not sure about that, but I'm pretty sure to have met you yet somewhere, but I can't remember where, can you help me?"

Aelfred was musing over the painting, when a voice interrupted his thoughts. Turning to the person speaking, he was startled to see it being none other than the subject of the painting himself.

Momentarily at a loss for words, the young woodsman sat with his jaw open. Again, face to face with a King. The words suddenly sank in.

"Greetings Sir. I'm not sure about that, but I'm pretty sure to have met you yet somewhere, but I can't remember where, can you help me?"

Aelfred couldn't help but smile, a chance to help a King not coming his way often. He stood, and bowed as graciously as he could, taking care not to stumble. "Certainly, Your Highness. I am at your service. 'Twas about a year hence, in Lothian. You shared a breakfast with myself and two of my companions. No doubt you would remember Sofie, her beauty was rarely matched in all the world I have seen. And my other companion, a man of the sword. Teodosio. Alas, they both passed this year of the fever." Aelfred's demeanor changed as he spoke, his pain obvious as he spoke of two lost loved ones. he hesitated, then continued, "You asked of my heritage, my name being that of the Northmen. I told you I was mixed Saxon and Danish blood."

Aelfred realized, as was often his wont, that he had begun to speak too much. "I see you have risen obove the merchant class now. It looks good on you." Suddenly aware of how shoddily he was dressed, Aelfred  felt like shrinking. He knew not what to do next, high manners not being his forte.

The young seemed to be a little bit surprised at the first moment then he replied: "Certainly, Your Highness. I am at your service. 'Twas about a year hence, in Lothian. You shared a breakfast with myself and two of my companions. No doubt you would remember Sofie, her beauty was rarely matched in all the world I have seen. And my other companion, a man of the sword. Teodosio. Alas, they both passed this year of the fever."

Harald’s thoughts went immediately to the young blond Lady he met in Wales and Scotland. True one of the most beautiful creature he has ever sought in his life. He was sad to hear that she passed away.

"You asked of my heritage, my name being that of the Northmen. I told you I was mixed Saxon and Danish blood."

Now Harald remember about this young man in front of him, and remembered that he was the beloved on the young Lady.

"I see you have risen obove the merchant class now. It looks good on you."

“Alfred right? Now I remember who you are!” Harald replied. “It was my last business trip in Scotland, not a good one indeed, but things have changed now”.

Harald saw the hindrance of the young man, “May I?” he asked to the man pointing out the chair; then, without waiting for a reply he sat “Me too I was always unprepared on how to behave with Regents, and I think I have never learnt it, especially now that I’m one of them” he said blinking to the man.

“Well, I would like to give the painter of that horror attached at the wall an excuse to do it again! Do you think I’m like that man hang there?” Harald laughed, “I’m twice and I have never dressed myself in such a colorful way! C’mon, I’m a man of the north! I walk among my people dressing a bear fur on my shoulder!” and laughed again.

“Maybe we can talk a little bit while eating something good and refreshing ourselves with good ale, do you?”

"Well. I could certainly eat. And if you need help drinking this Flemish beer, I am certain I could see through to pitching in." Aelfred grinned at the King, now he was discussing a subject Aelfred felt quite confident he was good at, consuming food and alcohol.

"Pray tell me, King Harald. How does one go from a traveling merchant to King in less than a year? And how does one learn all the things a King must know, like how to fight a war, or devise a treaty. It is all far too complex for me. Give me an axe to chop wood or a hoe to break ground and I am in my element, but all this diplomacy, manners and fine clothing, why I'd be a lost soul." He glanced down at his ragged, travel stained shirt and smiled sheepishly.

“Ah! And you’re not alone!” Harald replied smiling. “My tale…” he begun. How many times he made the same question to himself looking for an answer? A reasonable one?

“Well, I don’t know if I’m a good Regent or not, I mean, only the Flemish People could answer to you” Harald started sipping his ale. “I was asked by the former Count if I was interested to succeeded to him, and I really didn’t expect such a question, never...” he thought for a while to the day when he received the letter from Count Jehan. “I was first surprised and then honored by his request, but before to accept it I wanted to be sure about the Flemish People will; so when back here in Flanders I publicly asked to the People if they would have accepted me as their new Count, and here I am.”

He thought to his beginning, the great issues and problems. “Things needed to change, and they did thanks to the great commitment of the Flemish People, its Nobles and its People; here everybody knows that we’re all working to get better this place, our place, our Home. My commitment go to my People, their safety, their growth, no matter about that; everything I did, everything I’m doing follow the path of peace and prosperity for my People. Sure I did mistakes and I’ll do them again, hopefully they’ll be little ones.” He said smiling again to his northern friend.

"Remarkable"  Aelfred replied. "In the same year you have become KIng I have moved mountains of soil, chopped down dozens of trees, mined tons of ore and tended hives to generate gallons and gallons of honey. You have a throne and fine robes to wear, I these soiled clothes and worn out boots." He leaned back and burst out laughing. "And, at the end of the day, I'll bet I am happier and more ready to fall asleep than you."
"You are indeed an inspiration to all us common folk, yet for me I would not sit in your throne room for all the gold in Europe. I must feel the dirt in my fingernails, hear the buzz of the hives, smell the rain in the forest. I raise this mug to your health and well being, King Harald." At that the young woodsman raised his beer mug, smiling at his dinner companion. "To your success, King Harald"

Harald listened to what the northern man said and smiled. Then his guest raised his mug  "To your success, King Harald", “To your freedom” he replied.

In the meanwhile the bar maid brought them the dinner: a wonderful roasted deer meat with berries marmalade, cabbage and artichokes with honey and some delicious hot bread just made. “Uh, it seems that some of your honey arrived here” Harald said smiling to his guest.

“You know? You’re right my friend, sometimes I miss the freedom I had before, especially the chance to hunt or swim, sadly my duties keep me very busy most of the time… maybe if you’d stay here in Flanders for a while we could have a hunt together”.

Aelfred's eyes bulged as he saw the meal placed before them. As a struggling peasant, and a man of meager resources he had never been able to indulge in such an outstanding repast. It was not that he had never seen such a feast, having worked in the estate of Sir Simon de MontMallard before the fire took it all. But he had never been allowed to partake, and now he sat with a King before him to share the meal with. Inside he was trembling as he waited for King Harald to start eating.
"You would go hunting with me, a common woodsman? I would be more than honored to do so, King Harald. You know of course, we English practice with our longbows every day. I am considered by some to be a reasonable shot."
As the King began to eat Aelfred could not help but dig in heartily. He grinned from ear to ear, and within moments had juice from the venison mixing with honey and marmalade through his dark beard.
"I have several errands to conclude on the Island, but once they are through I would be more than happy to go hunting with you, Your Highness. Might I call once I return?"
Aelfred's insides quivered, awaiting the King's response. Should he have agreed immediately? Perhaps he should have said yes, not delayed, but to hunt with a King as your companion was no small matter. He tried to focus on his food while he waited for King Harald's answer.

Harald enjoyed the sight of the plate in front of him. Ummhhh it smells in an amazing way, isn’t it? Dear Sir it seems that we’ll have a hard task today in surviving this wonderful deer, ah! Ah!  Then he started to eat smiling to his guest clearly astonished of such a repast.

You would go hunting with me, a common woodsman? I would be more than honored to do so, King Harald. You know of course, we English practice with our longbows every day. I am considered by some to be a reasonable shot.

Uh, well, of course I’ll be happy to go hunt with you, why shouldn’t I be happy to do with you? Then he understood that the man came from another country where the etiquette probably was more present than in his Court. Oh, sorry, I didn’t understand your point, he smiled, well, as I said to you before, I’m still not used so often to follow the etiquette even if my Butler of Palace would like me to be better… well, more regal he said smiling to the man in front of him.

I have several errands to conclude on the Island, but once they are through I would be more than happy to go hunting with you, Your Highness. Might I call once I return?

Of course Sir Aelfred, I would like to hunt with a smart Scottish archer though… I’ve got a bunch of people that will be happy to hunt with us. Do your business and come back here, we’ll go south on the hills, a very beautiful landscape and an amazing place for hunting.

Having arrived from Bremen Sofie found a nice inn to spend the night at. After a very relaxing night she prepared herself. Before leaving her chamber she looked out of the window across a nice part of Brugge. The streets were crowded with busy merchants and craftsmen, travellers, women and children. With a smile on her face she looked at the streetlife for a while. I has been a good choice to leave Austria for a while, to get to know other regions, to see other faces and meet people from many other regions.

Only a few minutes later Sofie stepped out on the street and looked around, not sure where to turn.
She decided to stroll through the town and enjoy the sunny day. Having seen the market and the busy harbour she finally came across a small, inviting café called "Café de Brugge". This would be a nice place to have a tea she tought to herself and entered.

Aelfred was smiling at the King, his mouth dribbling some of the delicious venison, when a woman came through the inn door. Immediately Aelfred lost his concentration on King Harald's voice. The young woman was stunning. He swallowed the piece of meat in his mouth absentmindedly and then tried to pry his eyes from the woman as she searched for a place to sit. It had been long since he had seen such beauty, and though his Sofie was gone, he still felt some guilt at recognizing the beauty of another woman.
The King's words caught his attention once again. "Of course Sir Aelfred, I would like to hunt with a smart Scottish archer though… I’ve got a bunch of people that will be happy to hunt with us. Do your business and come back here, we’ll go south on the hills, a very beautiful landscape and an amazing place for hunting."
" I shall look forward to our outing with great excitement, Your Highness. And no doubt I will spend as much time with my bow practicing as my errands shall allow. Your time will not disappoint." The last was said distractedly, the vision of the dark haired woman still absorbing Aelfred's thoughts. The woman had found a seat in the far corner, and was now speaking with the serving girl.
"Your Highness, might I ask who that lovely woman over there might be? If she is an indication of the beauty of Flanders women, perhaps I might see through to moving here permanently. Perhaps you'd remember my Sofie was from here as well."

“I shall look forward to our outing with great excitement, Your Highness. And no doubt I will spend as much time with my bow practicing as my errands shall allow. Your time will not disappoint."

Harald smiled to his guest’s reply ‘Well my friend, we’ll see your bow at work on the field, it will be interesting and hopefully we have another juicy deer to eat’.

Harald noted that Sir Aelfred was elsewhere attracted.

"Your Highness, might I ask who that lovely woman over there might be? If she is an indication of the beauty of Flanders women, perhaps I might see through to moving here permanently. Perhaps you'd remember my Sofie was from here as well."

Harald turned his head to take a glance to the young Lady just entered the Café. He didn’t recognize her. Although she was well dressed, but with clothes unusual to see among the Flemish women, that confirmed to Harald she was a foreigner.

‘Uh, I don’t know her Sir Aelfred. But, that won’t be a problem, at the end I’m the Regent, isn’t it?’ without waiting for a reply Harald called the innkeeper with his right hand. The man run to their table ‘Yes, my Liege?’ he asked bowing his head a little. ‘Do you know who is that young lady there?’ the man looked quickly at the young lady, then he replied ‘No, my Lord, I’ve never seen her before; would you like I ask something?’. Harald looked at his guest and then he replied ‘Yes Sir, please tell to young Lady that the Count of Flanders will be delighted to host her to his table’. The innkeeper bow again and then turned towards the young Lady still in the middle of the hall.

Sofie was just about to approach a small table near the window as the innkeeper stepped to her, explaining about the invitation to the count's table. Her eyes slightly widened with surprise as she turned her head, looking for a moment to the mentioned place, nodding to the two gentlemen with a friendly smile. Turning back to the innkeeper she thanked him, also offering him a smile.
Count Harald Magnusson himself! Sofie would have never expected to meet him or any other regent in some café, inviting travelling guests to share their table. The young woman took a deep calm breath, now slowly walking towards the count and his companion. Harald Magnusson's name made her assume that he was a northman, at least his anchestors would be. Examining with a quick gaze the appearance and the clothing of the two gentlemen at the table she hoped that she would not fail with her assumption.

Sofie curtsied and bowed her head towards the count, offering him a warm smile again. How to address a count? She would always mix those titles up, she would never get used to courtly manners and salutation. "Count Harald Magnusson, your lordship. It is my pleasure to meet you, even more your invitation, thank you so much." She then nodded to the second gentleman with a friendly smile. "A good day to you, sire." Clearing her throat, trying to swallow down her uncertainty, the young woman turned to the sovereign again. "May I introduce myself: Sofie Falkenburg, humble tailor from the Duchy of Austria."

Still standing in two steps' distance to the table, Sofie curtsied again upon her introduction, waiting for the count's word.

Harald looked the innkeeper speaks to the young Lady. He noted her indecision and her surprise, but also her will and good manner when she forced herself to break the ancient rules of the etiquette, accepting the invitation.

"Count Harald Magnusson, your lordship. It is my pleasure to meet you, even more your invitation, thank you so much."

Harald smiled waiting for the young lady to introduce herself.

"May I introduce myself: Sofie Falkenburg, humble tailor from the Duchy of Austria."

Dear Lady Falkenburg, I will be delighted to host you to my humble table, please sit down here’ Harald pointed to the chair. Then without waiting for a reply he added ‘I hope you’ll forgive me for my unconventional manners. I’m still not so used to the etiquette; I’m a man of the north, pretty much used to do rather than to command or manage a Court, even if the Court-Steward insists that I should learn the etiquette… at the end I think he’s right… I mean, I think that is no common to meet a Regent sat in a Café like a commoners, isn’t it?' He said blinking to the young Lady.

Please Lady Falkenburg, forgive me, I’m glad to introduce to you Sir Aelfred Ulricsson from Scotland, another nice foreigner here in Brugge and another host of mine at my table today’.

With a faint nod Sofie sat down on the pointed chair. "Thank you very much, your lordship." While sitting down she gently wiped over her skirt as if smoothening the cloth. But rather she dried the palms of her hands, which were a bit clammy due to the excitement of a for her unusual situation.

While listening to the count's words she again tried to examine the sovereign inconspicuously, at least she hoped so. At his explanations about lack of knowledge of the etiquette she could not avoid a soft smirk. "I guess this is something we have in common, if you allow such remark. Indeed, I would have not expected the regent of Flanders sitting in a café. On the other hand it prooves that you are among your people and care about them, I guess."

Offering Harald Magnusson a warm smile Sofie listened to his further words, slowly relaxing a little bit, yet still nervous enough to play with her hands placed on her lap. As the count introduced the other gentleman at the table the young woman turned toward the latter with a friendly smile. "Pleased to meet you, Sir Aelfred Ulricsson. From Scotland? I have never been there but I heard that the landscape must be breathtaking."

Aelfred was stunned when his dinner companion invited the young woman to the table, and then swallowed hard as he saw her accept. She came and bantered with the Count so comfortably, it was obvious she was at least familiar with high born etiquette. This made her that much more intimidating. He watched mesmerized, as the two greeted one another and wondered why his stomach had butterflies. Why could he face down a charging boar, or trade blows with an armored enemy, yet feel so helpless in the face of such a lovely woman.
As Harald introduced him to the Lady, Aelfred stood, his intention to bow as he believed was most polite. Unfortunately, as often seemed to happen to Aelfred, things did not proceed as he had planned. As he stood his right knee caught on the leg of the heavy oak table, causing him to wince and twist away, and in so doing his elbow caught the recently filled mug of ale on the table and launched it at the woman and the Count. Aelfred, instinctively grabbing his bruised knee, began to turn several shades of red, mumbling apologies and all the while stifling a grunt of pain. Horrified, he knew not what to say. "Hardly the first impression you had wished to make, you fool" he thought to himself. Still not sure what to say, he limped and stumbled round the table, searching for something to help dry the two people before him.
"Uh, umm, of course, M'Lady. A bit on the cold side for most from the Mainland, but if you can get used to that our landscape is nice enough I guess." Aelfred felt trapped, how much more awkward an answer could he have made. At least the innkeeper and his serving girl were hurrying over to cover for the young woodsman's earlier disaster.

Before really recognising what happened, Sofie heard a clunk and in the very next moment felt the sleeve of her dress getting wet. Her head turned abruptly and she raised her hand, trying to keep the mug from rolling off the table ... a hopeless undertaking, as it prooved as the mug fell to the floor, arising even more the attention of all guests and service personnel. Hastily Sofie edged aside a bit with her chair so at least she could avoid her lap being soaked with ale.

A serving maid reached her some cloth to dry her sleeve and as soon as the excitement settled, Sofie rolled her eyes playfully and could not avoid a soft laugh. "Such desaster normally is my part. So thank you, Sir Aelfred for taking over." she tried to play the situation down, while still dabbing her sleeve with the cloth.

Aelfred chuckled, despite his embarrassment. "It is unlikely you would be as clumsy as I. I am only this way when I am nervous" he blurted out, then realized his thoughts were being spoken aloud. "I apologize, but your beauty overwhelms me Madamoiselle" He tried to use the limited French he had learned in his earlier travels, in a desperate attempt to impress. "Courage above all" he thought to himself, repeating his father's favorite motto.
In all this he had almost forgotten the Count, and now looked as the inn's owner helped Harald to deal with his ale soaked clothing. Aelfred's discomfort increased.
He bowed his head and said apologetically, "Your Highness, how may I make up for this foolish gaff? I have no coin to pay for your clothing, but I have a strong back and could work in exchange for their costs. I am truly sorry."

Sofie, chuckling herself at Aelfred's words about him being more clumsy than she was, gently shook her head. "You should not bet on that, Sir Aelfred." She put aside the piece of cloth she had used to dry her sleeve, then at the scotsman further explanation she literally froze for a moment. Gazing at Aelfred Sofie's cheeks covered with a reddish glow. "Erm ... thank you." she muttered after having cleared her throat. 'Mademoiselle' Sofie smiled. She liked the sound of the french language, it sounded so ... noble, sophisticated and being called 'mademoiselle' made her feel somehow special.

While Aelfred tried to make up with the souvereign, the young woman moved back with her chair to sit propperly, being able to look at both her companions alike, however, the chair a bit more turned towards the regent.
Compassionably Sofie looked at Sir Aelfred and tried to offer him a reassuring smile. He must have felt awful ... and she was awfully sorry for him as she was aware of how embarrassing such situation was, she had experienced mishappenings like that herself often enough.

While Aelfred waited for Harald's reply Sofie had spoken. "Sir Aelfred" was how she had referred to him, though he was not a knight. As he thought, he realized that the Count had also called him "Sir Aelfred" before Sofie had. He swallowed hard as he realized he must clarify, especially to this beautiful creature before him that he was not of the high born classes. Ah, that he were a noble, it would be so easy. She would be even less impressed now.
"Excuse me, Mademoiselle Sofie, but I must correct a misunderstanding. I am no Knight of the Realm, I am but a simple woodsman, a hard working man of the forest. I fear you have somehow misinterpreted my standing." He winced once he had spoken, expecting he knew not what response. As he did so he gestured to his rather worn travel attire. "I am, as you see, no rich man."

For a short moment Sofie pressed her lips as she listened to Aelfred. With addressing him with 'Sir' she wanted to be polite. She had never been sure about titles and now she had embarrassed this nice gentleman with her nescience. She had learned not to only judge people from their clothing, even kings sometimes used to wear simple clothes, but obviously she had not learned enough yet. "I ... oh well, I have to admit that I am not very familiar with titles and appropriate salutations." Now it was her turn to be embarrassed and Sofie could not avoid an insecure smile. "In my eyes a courteous and polite gentleman may indeed be addressed as sir. I am sorry in case I did embarrass or insult anyone."

With an excusing smile the young woman looked from Aelfred to the count and back. How much easier was her life back home in Austria, where she knew most of the people and was sure how to address them. She liked to travel but she loved to get back home again into familiar surrounding where she just could be herself.

"Home. You spoke of Austria. Is this where you call home, Mademoiselle Sofie?" Aelfred wasn't certain, but he thought she seemed pleased each time he used his limited French. He desperately searched his memory for any other French word that might have the same effect. Then one struck him, if he could use it correctly.
"You spoke of being a tailor. Perhaps one day you might make me some pantoufles. We call them slippers of course, but the French, well, you know, they use other words for things" He broke into a broad grin, proud of having found a word in his vocabulary, and almost positive he used it correctly. Surely now this lovely maiden would be impressed. He tried to look as sophisticated as he could in a travel stained outfit, his left leg still wet with ale.

Sofies answered Aelfred's question with a nod. "Austria, right, though it is not my birthplace. But I have found a new home there. The people are nice and the landscape is gorgeous." she explained with a happy smile.

Also the woodworker's further words regarding her profession were confirmed with a gentle nod. Then she looked a bit quizzingly and giggled softly. "Pan...toufles?" Upon Aelfred's explanation her eyebrows rose understandingly. "Oooh, I see." As if finding confirmation for his words Sofie looked down at her shoes for an instance before raising her gaze again with a smile.
"Of course, it would be my pleasure to make a pair of ... pantoufles ... for you." With a wide grin Sofie repeated the word delightedly. "But for propper work I would need to make a wooden last to be sure that the shoe... erm pantoufles would fit perfectly."

Sofie looked up for the serving maid. She was thirsty and she was sure that the gentlemen would want some new ale themselves. The maid was busy, so the young woman turned back towards Aelfred and offered him an impressed smile. "Where did you learn French? I like this language very much, it sounds so nice ... though I have to admit I do not know a single word."
Aelfred was far away from home and Sofie assumed that he travelled a lot. He surely spoke several languages to make himself understood during his journeys. Brushing an intractable strand of hair behind her ear she looked at Aelfred with a curious, interested gaze.

Harald was flooded by ale especially in his beard. He didn’t expect to be washed by ale any time soon and his face was full of suds.

Harald looked at his guest and his embarrassment and smiled ‘Well, after this shower my People will think their Regent is a drunkard… at least they could be right even if this good ale flooded upon me rather than inside me.. Ah! Ah!’ he said toning down the excitement of the poorer Aelfred. ‘You owe me an ale my friend, and a good one’ he said blinking to the man still trying to calm down himself and to help the young foreigners Lady. ‘Next time you’ll come here in Brugge we’ll meet again but I’ll chose for a bigger table ah! Ah!’ Harald said.

In the meanwhile the innkeeper and his barmaid arrived to clean up the table and the King ‘Please, my Liege, let me clean your person’ the innkeeper said trying to help Harald ‘Oh, thank you so much Jaan, but I think I can survive to this terrific flood’[/b] he said smiling ‘at least if I’ll get thirsty during the day I can sip my beard ah! Ah!’, ‘please help this young lady here and my purple guest, and bring us more ale’s' Harald said. ‘Of course my Liege’ the man replied.

While he was cleaning up himself, Harald heard the conversation between the two foreigners; he noted the good and polite manners of the young Lady while she was trying to help Aelfred.

Osterreich is a wonderful place for sure’ Harald started once cleaned and restored, ‘I’ve been there several times during my travels before becoming Flanders’ Regent. King David and I we are very good friend, our friendship go back when we both were simple citizens carrying no other duty if our personal ones; he’s a very good man and I’m sure his Kingdom will flourish well under his government’ Harald said while sitting down again on his chair. ‘And you’re right my Lady, the landscape is simply amazing, its mountains and forests are something that remind me my ancestors land, a very good place to live in, no matter about that’. Then, going on he added ‘The same is here in Flanders, most of the People came from outside our borders looking for a new place where to live in; peace and prosperity is what people is used to look for, and peace and prosperity is what Regents should grant to their People, that’s what I think about Regency. The same as for knights Sir Aelfred’ he said looking at the man, ‘Lordship or other titles sounds empty to me if under the title there’s no a good man or a good woman; only your behavior, your manners and what you did can testify about yourself and who you are. Here in Flanders only those who are mostly committed towards the good sake of the People deserve a Noble title’. ‘You are a woodsman, a simple one? Good enough to me, it’s up to you and to your behavior to show your qualities’ he concluded looking the man in his eyes. 'For sure you won't be hired to be a barman... ah! ah!' he said laughing.

"Ha ha, yes indeed Your Highness. Were I to become a barman, no doubt the innkeep would be carefully counting the mugs behind me. I think the temptation to drink more than serve would overcome me. That, and the cost of replacing the clothing of the soaked guests." Aelfred grinned broadly. "You know, Count Harald, for a King you are mighty forgiving. Were my regent any other than The Bruce himself, I would gladly swear allegiance to your throne. There is no doubt in my mind your subjects are very happy."
He turned then to Sofie, and tried his most fetching smile. "An excellent question, Mademoiselle. I spent some time in the army of Normandy and France a year or two ago, and it was there I picked up what little I know of the French language. I am lucky, languages come more easily to me than such things as writing and numbers. Perhaps one day you might teach me some of your mother tongue." He tried to hold his smile, all the while his stomach aflutter. "Courage above all", he heard his dead father's voice in his head.

Sofie was surprised, how relaxed the regent cleaned himself from Aelfred's happening without losing an upset word. For some other nobles such happenings would have been a good reason to have people hanged, imprisoned at least.

The woman listened to Harald's anecdotes about King David and himself and the time before they took the thrones.
"King David, yes, he indeed is a good man. I met him when he was still a vassal under King Friedrich." With a smirk she continued. "I guess it was due to David's persistency that I finally decided to move to Osterreich."
She answered the regent's further explanations about peoples' wishes and kings' duties with a nod. "You are absolutely right, your Highness. A good regent cares for his people and this of course attracts simple men and women, nobles, craftsmen and peasants who seek a good life without having to worry too much about how to feed their families."

In the meantime the barmaid brought the ordered ale and upon the souvereign's joke about sir Aelfred's abilities to work as a barman a soft chuckle could be heard.

Turning to the Scotsman Sofie listened to him, her eyes widening a bit. "In the army, I see. A dangerous job to do, a bloody one at times." A faint smile showed on her lips. "But obviously you did a good job, otherwise we would not have the pleasure of your company."

Sofie relaxed more with every moment. Sir Aelfred was a real nice person and King Harald did not insist on behaving like a souvereign, so the gentlemen's company was very convenient.

"If you wish, I would gladly try to teach you a bit of my mother tongue." she explained at the Scotsman proposal, however could not avoid laughing a bit. "Though I do not know if I will turn out to be a good teacher."
Pondering for a moment, Sofie tilted her head slightly and focussed Sir Aelfred with a playfully challenging gaze. "How about an agreement: I will teach you some of my mother language and you will teach me some French in return?"

" Erm, uh, umm," the young woodsman mumbled, "Teach you French? Alas, fair Mademoiselle, I know some of the language, but not well enough to teach you. And the truth is, much of what I learned would not be fit for such a lady as yourself, more for a company of rough soldiers." His mind scrambled now, seeking something else he might exchange for the woman's time.
" I am however a strong worker, perhaps your shop would need some mending. I can lift, carry, and toil hard. The heavier the work, the happier I am." Aelfred smiled again, and rubbed the rabbit's foot he kept in his pocket for luck. A trip to Austria might be not that bad a way to spend the next couple of months.
"I really would like to learn Austrian."

The inn door swings open a bit too quickly and bangs hard into the wall.  An embarrassed fisherman enters with the wind and closes the door.  His ragged clothes soaked and crusted in salt, he blushingly nods to the others in the room.  Paying no mind to the puddles he is leaving behind with each step, he makes his way to the bar.

Hot tea, please. And honey, Keep.  Lots of honey.

He dries his large drooping moustache on his already too-wet sleeve.  Wartooth sniffles a bit ... and finally sneezes with what looks like a sense of triumph.

"Oh well..." With a soft chuckle Sofie shrugged faintly. "No problem. I am sure, we will ..."
Her head turned, the young woman wincing startled at the loud bang of the door. For a moment she examined the fisherman, then mumbled with a smirk "Either it is raining cats and dogs or he desperately needs a new boat." rather to herself than to her company.

She was just about to turn again to Sir Aelfred, as a loud sneeze caught her attention again. "Bless you!" she nodded to the stranger, then without waiting for his reply or reaction finally focussed on her host and his companion again. Sofie raised her mug of ale. Not her favourite drink, but now and then she enjoyed a fresh ale. With a smile she looked to King Harald. "Thank you very much, your Highness, for the invitation and your company." With the last words she also offered Aelfred a warm smile, raising her mug a bit more at her toast and waiting for regent to open the round, as her manners commanded her.

"No problem. I am sure, we will ..." the young lady was interrupted by the door. Harald turned his head to see what was happening there, and saw the fisherman. He looked at him for a while and recognized he probably come from a northern country. His look, his manners, his proud glaze told Harald there was another northern man in Brugge.

"Thank you very much, your Highness, for the invitation and your company." Lady Sofie cheered. Waiting for a reply. Harald raised his mug too.

May the Ancient Northern Gods bless your path, my welcomed guests. May the wind always blows your sails towards your desire, may the sun always shine on your life.’

Then he stood up from the table ‘Please stay’ he said, ‘My duties call me in another place, although I see that you’ll be busy in the coming future teaching each other languages..’ he said blinking to the young Lady that started to become a little bit purple.
Then, looking at Aelfred he continued ‘my dear Scottish mate ‘I’ll wait for you for our hunt! Remember, the King of Flanders is waiting for you, be ready to show me your qualities, otherwise I’ll be forced to write to my old friend King Bruce telling him one of his citizens is mocking the King of Flanders!’ he said seriously. Aelfred face was changing color to something among green and white, his eyes showing he was thinking how to handle this situation. Harald started to laugh ’Ah! Ah! My friend, you should take a look to your face right know!‘ Seeing Aelfred starting to relax a bit he added ‘don’t worry my friend, you’ll be safe until you owe me a beer! Ah! Ah!

Then he nodded to both his guest and turned, followed by his guards towards the foreigner ‘Hei, hva godt vinden bringer deg hit i Brugge?

Enjoying the warming feel of the steam from his mug of herbal tea on his face, he daydreams a bit about something distant.  Hearing a Danish tongue being spoken, he turns around with mild surprise ... only to be faced with King himself ... speaking to HIM.  He looks around the room nervously hoping someone would be gracious enough to intervene.  Maybe save him from any embarrassment.

Taking a good drink from her ale, she watched the regent walking towards the new guest, then she turned to Aelfred again. After another sip Sofie puts down her mug. "Anyway, I would gladly also teach you my native togue any service in return. On the other hand..." The young woman tilted her head playfully pondering. "I desperately need new shelves for my tailory." With a grin she took up her mug. "So if you happen to be around Osterreich..."

It's as good a place as any to start a life, my liege.  And the fish are plenty.

Looking forlorn and staring through his cooling tea, his thoughts momentarily wander off to a previous life ... a previous land.  Anyway..., he utters breaking himself from the memories, I really do need some sleep before another day among the waves.  I suppose I should see your bishop soon too.  He finishes off his tea, nods, By your leave, Sire.        Aelfred was unsure how to respond. He had just told the King he was unable to hunt until finishing business back in his home country and now this lovely young  woman had asked him to travel yet further. Without realizing it, his face showed his bewilderment most clearly. Quickly he must decide whether his bees could survive alone, without his help, for as long as a trip to Austria and shelf building might take.
"Of course I am very handy with wood Sofie. I would be proud to build your shelves, if you so wish. But, if I might ask, how far is it to Austria? You'll remember I have never been there."
Title: Re: [ORP] Cafe de Brugge

Recognising Aelfred's confused gaze, Sofie smiled at him. "Well, Sir Aelfred, the journey might take a few days towards southeast, across the kingdom of Bavaria. But I am sure that you have more important things to do, the shelves can wait. Until now I could help myself with wooden chests and cases, that will do for some more time."

The young woman enjoyed another good sip from the ale, then turned to Aelfred again, recalling the words of the souvereign. "You will be going for a hunt with the regent? How exciting! I would definitely prefer such hunt to building shelves. So I do understand that you won't be able to travel to Austria right now."
Sofie would not be able to stay very much longer in Brugge, as there was quite some work waiting for her in Osterreich. "And I bet your family in Scotland is desperately waiting for your return." she added with a warm smile.

Aelfred's eyes clouded when Sofie mentioned his family. "Alas, unless you consider a overgrown mangy cat family, I have none to speak of. My parents are both dead, and I no longer speak with my brothers. Rarely does anyone visit my hovel on the mountainside, so, you see, there is no family to miss Aelfred." He quickly changed the subject back to the journey. "You say you must cross Bavaria? I am hearing of much strife and conflict there. You will need protection.  I could be that, if you would allow me to. I am not a violent man, but sometimes there is no choice. My axe has been used for things other than wood in the past."
He hoped at this moment he looked fearsome enough, though Aelfred doubted a ale soaked and travel stained work shirt would appear battleworthy to many.

Sofie noticed a sense of grief clouding Aelfred's gaze. At his explanation she nodded hardly noticeable. "I am very sorry to hear that." she almost whispered. She knew how it felt to miss the parents, especially having been very close to them as the only child.

She emptied her mug and confirmed Aelfred's following words. "Yes, there indeed has been conflict in Bavaria. But I must have been blessed by the Gods until now, as I could always travel those lands without harm."
Offering a warm and almost relieved smile at Aelfred she continued "But I have to admit that I would feel much safer with an escort." Sofie recalled Aelfred having told about his times in the armies, so she was sure that he knew how to use his axe not only on wood. "Of course I will compensate your efforts and the travel expenses, Sir Aelfred ... so, yes, I would gladly accept your offer for protection."

Bavaria really seemed to be a troubled land and she felt sorry for its inhabitants, as they surely could not lead a happy life.

Aelfred's face broke out into a huge grin. "I am your man for this journey. I am certain the hives will survive on their own for a while, and Sir Evil One is bound to catch his fill of mice at this time of year." He paused briefly, then added, "Just when did you intend to go? Not that I am pushing, but so I at least have an idea. there will be a few things to prepare."
Despite his attempts at appearing nonchalant, his enthusiasm for this trip was more than obvious. He smiled again at Sofie, his mind already going over what supplies might be needed for the next few weeks.

Sofie could not avoid a soft smirk when seeing Aelfred's grin. She was sure she could pass Bavaria without incidents, but she knew how important it was for men to have the feeling being able to protect women, no matter what stand or profession, no matter were born. Not that she mocked that fact. On the contrary Sofie was glad that there were the well trained, attentive soldiers, guards, escorts, without whom life definitely would be way more dangerous. Yet she was somewhat amused about the sparkles in each man's eyes when being in charge to lend a helping hand holding a weapon.

She offered Aelfred a warm smile. "Well, I wanted to stay another night and was planning to leave Brugge tomorrow. If you need more time to prepare though, I will gladly wait. One day more or less won't matter. But please, Sir Aelfred, ..." Sofie reached her hand out, softly laid in onto Aelfred's arm for a short moment and looked at him. "... only if you won't get into trouble by changing your plans." Pulling back her hand again, she smirked. "I really do not want to have hundreds of bees lives to answer for." she winked at Aelfred.

At Sofie"s wink, Aelfred's breath caught in his throat. "Mademoiselle, have I yet told you you are tres jolie, most especially when you smile like that." He could not help but smile back. "As to the bees, they will survive, though I hope the Queen doesn't get too jealous of me spending time with another female." He chuckled at his own joke, then continued.  "I will have time to deliver you to your home safely, build some shelves as you ordered and still return before the autumn and the changing of the leaves when the bees go dormant. I can be ready as soon as you wish, after a short trip to the market in the morning to fill my travel pack with food."
A trip farther afield had been the last thing on Aelfred's mind when he awoke this morning but this strange change in fortune had brightened his day immensely. He took another large bite of his venison so as to not seem too excited, watching Sofie carefully.

Sofie blushed at Aelfred's words. She did not know what the words 'très jolie' exactly meant, but his gaze and tone told her that it must have been very nice. She returned his smile, yet tilting her head with a slightly quizzing expression.
But before being able to ask the Scotsman about the meaning of those words, his joke about the queen of the bees made her chuckle. Sofie looked at Aelfred playfully horrified. "I surely hope nobody will inform her. I heard bees can even find their way hundreds of miles away from their hive."

Sofie was looking forward to the journey with Aelfred at her side. Not only that is would be much safer with him as escort, it would also be much more diverting. She nodded at his words. "Very well then. I will have to buy some supplies myself before leaving. So ... we could meet in front of this café in the morning, maybe around the ninth hour? Or would that be too early?"

"The ninth hour it shall be then. I have no doubt I can get my self in order by that time, and most of these merchants here open at daybreak. Is there anything that you'll need while I am buying supplies?" The promise of action had Aelfred's full attention, and to travel with such an interesting companion would certainly make it even better than hoped. Finishing his ale, he gestured to the innkeeper.
Looking back at Sofie while he awaited the man's arrival Aelfred asked, "Would you care to take a stroll around these streets for a last time before we set out? It is such a lovely small town. Have you been down to the riverside?" His effort at being sophisticated appeared, at least to him, quite effective, until he glanced down and remembered just how shabbily he was dressed, and to walk with a tailor as well. He wondered again why she had agreed to accepting his companionship. It must be that the lucky rabbit's foot was working as he had been promised.

With a smile Sofie shook her head upon Aelfred's proposal to get her needed things. "You are very kind, but I will need to talk myself with a weaver I met today. She will show me some of her cloth before I'll leave again." This most definitely was something Aelfred would not be interested in, a chat among women about cloth, clothing and latest fashion. The young woman wanted to take a look at Flander's fashion, which sppeared wonderful to her. Maybe she would get some inspiration for some of her own tailoring.

At Aelfred's invitation to stroll around Brugge for a bit, Sofie's smile widened. "A wonderful idea! I have seen the port from some distance but to be honest I did not want to go further down there on my own." Brugge was a really wonderful place and Sofie was sure that guards and constables would be caring for everyone's security. Yet she would not want to tempt her fate. With a nod and sparkling eyes she once again emphasized her anticipation to see more of Brugge. "A really excellent idea!"

Though she haven't known the Scotsman for more than maybe half an hour or a bit more, she had the feeling she could trust him. Her first impression of people and her knowledge of human nature hardly ever misled her. Maybe the journeys with her father had taught her this.

Aelfred finished his business with the innkeeper and then turned to Sofie and carefully bowed, waving his right arm in a direction of the door, then he hurriedly and awkwardly rushed past her as it occurred to him to open the heavy oak door for her. His luck held as normally he would have surely stepped upon her feet while so doing, yet this evening it was merely a last second lunge to the left which saved his embarrassment and Sofie's toes.  He heaved a sigh of relief as he realized how close the disaster had been. Perhaps she would not notice.
Stepping out into the cool night air behind Sofie, Aelfred took a deep breath, looked and smiled at his companion. "I do believe this is my lucky night, Sofie. If you look at the stars above you will see my sign, see where the stars form the shape of a longsword. It shone brightly upon the morning of my birth, so my parents told me. My father's people called it "Thor's Blade."

Sofie stood from her chair and bowed her head with a soft chuckle upon Aelfred's gesture. As he rushed to open the door for her she smiled at him. "Thank you." and left the café. At his explanation she looked up into the skies and tried to figure out the stars forming the shape of a longsword. But there were so many of those sparkling lights that she did not succeed, which however she did not want to admit. So Sofie just smiled at Aelfred. "Thor's Blade? Sounds dangerous to me, but mighty as well. So yes, this most probably should be a special night for you, I can imagine." After a short while she added with a quizzing gaze "Who is Thor?"

While strolling along and enjoying the fresh night air and the busy streets of Brugge yet at that quite late hour of the day Sofie turned to Aelfred again. "I did not yet thank you for the ale, so ... well, yes, thank you very much, Sir Aelfred." With a soft movement of her head she motioned back towards the direction of the café. "I hope I was not interrupting an important discussion with Lord Magnusson."

"Well, it is true that I rarely am noticed by someone as important as a regent, however I knew Harald Magnusson before he was King here. He came to Scotland on one of his merchant journeys in the past. It was there I met him. He is a wonderfully approachable fellow for a King, don't you think?"
Aelfred reached out his hand, subtly allowing it to brush Sofie's, hoping she might take hold of his in the moment. He sucked in some of the cool evening breeze coming off the river.
"You have asked me about my family but have yet to tell me of yours. Are they too in Austria?"

Sofie smiled at Aelfred's words, then she nodded. "He is a wonderful person, yes. You would not necessarily think that he is a regent. I mean, not that he would have no manners or the like, but well, he appears to be so ... normal." Wrinkling her nose Sofie looked at Aelfred with a unsecure smile. She did not want to insult the souvereign nor discredit him in any way. "You know what I mean?"

Aelfred's company was very pleasant, Sofie enjoyed talking to him. He was nice and polite, friendly and courteous and for her somebody's stand or the contents of their purse did not tip the scales for liking a person or not.
When she felt his hand touching hers by chance - as she thought - her heart skipped a beat and she felt like armies of ants were spreading from the back of her hand up her arm and crawling down her back again. For the blink of an eye she allowed her hand resting at his, then Sofie folded her hands in front of her lap while slowly strolling on. With a deap, calm breath she tried to calm her beating heart down, then cleared her throat.

"My family?" She looked at the scotsman with a soft smile, the concentrated on the lights of the docks and ships again. "My mother passed away when I was young. My father tried to be father and mother at the same time after her death..." Sofie turned to Aelfred again with a warm smile in remembrance of her father. "...and he did well. He taught me very much while taking me with him on business journeys. I was born in Oberbayern, you know, but this had never been home to me. Home was where my father took us."
Obviously pondering for a moment she tilted her head. "There must be some cousins of him, but I don't even know them."

Having reached the port Sofie stopped and looked at the ships, while the wind carried busy noise towards them. "I love the docks after sunset and in the very early mornings, with the lights and the hustle and bustle."

Aelfred stood for a moment, looking over the boats and seamen finishing up their busy day. "I have never been much of a sailor myself, but there is something about the sea that draws you to it, don't you think?" He glanced at her, careful not to look to long for fear of appearing like he was staring, still awed by the fact she was willing to spend time with him.
"It sounds as if you are almost alone in this world as I am. Might I ask how long since your parents passed?"
